Residents / owners love the simplicity of the platform (it obliterates old offline processes) but building managers / property managers struggle with it because they are stuck in their old, offline processes and do not like change ... Classic case of laggard thinking.

Re: Distraction

I would say that it's a major strength. I want to share a story that may be useful to your readers ...

In the last company I ran we had constant demands from our Gen-Y staff to "work from home". We had a staff in excess of 100 people and given the creative and innovative work we were expected to deliver to our clients, we intuitively understood that it required people to be physically together as you describe in your post above. We realized we needed to do sometime new and different to encourage people to spend more time in the office and to "force" them together to create the critical mass of energy and passion necessary to repeatedly come up with creative and innovative solutions to our clients' needs.

Instead of mandating attendance at the office, the leadership team and I came up with a more powerful idea.

We created a series of wonderful working spaces that encouraged random "happenstance" in many physical areas across the three floors we occupied. Traditional meeting rooms were held to a minimum and the "happenstance" spaces were decorated like a typical condo living room with comfortable sofas, chairs and coffee tables. We had smoked glass walls adjacent to each area so people could collaborate and write up their ideas or stick up Post-it notes for brainstorming sessions.

In a matter of weeks, people naturally gravitated to the "living rooms" we had set up and it fundamentally changed the way our teams interacted with each other. On any typical day, the energy and creativity of teams working together in these spaces was a powerful stimulus to our business. The spaces were located next to the central staircases we had running through the office and by design staff were exposed to these "energy centers" as they physically transversed the office.

It became fun to come into the office and the benefit of physical interaction soon outweighed the demands to "work from home".

I'm not suggesting that this is the only way to do it but the key message is not to overlook the importance of the physical space and make it as attractive as possible.

Several years later I was lucky enough to visit the Pixar offices in Oakland, CA and I witnessed their genius at using physical space to drive innovation.

Re: The Shave Heard ‘Round the World

Excellent post!
