Telling South Koreans that all their property might be seized by communists in 100 years is very similar.

Re: A Direct-Democracy Healthcare Bill | Scott Adams' Blog

With all the talk of online organization, I thought this post would end in another ad for WhenHub.

Re: Returning to Microsoft

This blog post was pretty coherent until the last two paragraphs, which have incomplete sentences. But the only USB cables I have ever broken are ones that I've abused (e.g. using them in a state where I am bending them at a sharp angle). The Volutz cables you pointed to look good because they have 19 AWG power wires: thicker than Tronsmart. I also like that they are color coded. Thanks for the tip!

Re: The Best Micro-USB Cable

I think you can't really do it with one strand, but you can certainly take all the strands and see which holes in a wire stripper they can fit in to as a whole. Since the marketing materials might be inaccurate, I think the testers at TheWireCutter.com really should be cutting USB cables open and measuring the gauge. It would not add too much time to the hundreds of hours they already spent on testing.

Re: The Best Micro-USB Cable

What thickness are the Anker power wires and how did you determine this?

Re: The Best Smart LED Light Bulbs

You mentioned this in the flaws section: "If the power goes out and comes back on again, the bulbs will all light up in full white mode." Does anyone know of a good hack or workaround for this? Is there any brand of smart bulb that does let you set a default color?

I would like to be able to use a regular light switch to control my bulbs most of the time. It's ridiculous to think that I would reach for my smartphone every time I walk in my room and want to turn on the light, and if I just turn it on using the switch then I would get an unpleasant color.

There is a long thread about this topic where the Phillips Hue developers are defending this design flaw for bad reasons and otherwise failing to listen to what their customers want:

http://www.developers.meeth...

Re: The Best Micro-USB Cable

Hey, why is there no discussion of the gauge/thickness/AWG of the USB cables? The thickness affects how much resistance the cable will have.

The Anker cables on Amazon that you link to in this article have this weird diagram that makes it look like their positive power cable is 24 AWG and the ground cable is much smaller. That would seem like a bad decision, since the power wire and the ground wire both have to carry the same amount of current. Also, one of the cables has a diagram which is drawn exactly the same except it claims that the power wire is 20 AWG. Those diagrams are thus inconsistent with eachother and it also seems like it is marketing BS.

I prefer Tronsmart USB cables because they claim to have 20 AWG power and ground lines. They are also available on Amazon and they seem to be a lot cheaper than Anker cables.

Re: .NET Core, a call to action

I would love to use .NET Core if it had the GUI library we use, System.Windows.Forms.

Re: Timeout: Ruby's Most Dangerous API

So if you use a low-level network timeout, how exactly does that prevent the same 6-step sequence from happening and leading to disaster?
