Could not agree more with trust being a base factor in sales, and in my world (project-based customers), that trust or lack of trust tends to carry through the extent of a project. If you don't build that up front, you still may make the sale but end up getting second-guessed by the customer during the full project and beyond. Not fun.

One other thing I'd add to making the sale that has really been working for me, both up-front and during the project: Show gratitude. I think clients start to trust you more when they feel like you are grateful for them. Remember that early feeling of "wow, someone is actually willing to pay me money to buy this?" Let a little of that gratitude and wonder come through. This is vital during the customer support phase as well.

Re: That Time I Was A Sponsored Sailor

The sailor suit is a classic. Had to comment as this is very similar to how we track and manage our household budget. We do use Mint to track balances and trends, but I'm pretty hands-on with that which makes a big difference. However, we do use Google Drive for all of the monthly cash-flow and budgeting and Google Calendar for the bill reminders. I definitely agree that it helps to become more pro-active about everything. Being self-employed, another thing I've found that helps us is to pay myself a weekly salary as opposed to monthly, bi-weekly, or as needed (as-needed is terrible, actually). That really helps us more accurately budget things like groceries, household supplies, and gas for our vehicles.

Re: Help Us Promote Our Road Trip, Win The Brand New Apple iPhone 5

I do not see MN on this list of stops, Jason. ;)

Re: An Interview with Bob Goff [Video]

I would love to read this book. I do think that moving the DVD service to its own brand is a good move AS LONG AS the streaming service gets better. I do like what you added about a more social approach as well.

When they initially made the split between DVD & streaming services a few months ago, I decided to stick with streaming. It's so easy to sit down and find something to watch, especially with kids' programs. As for accessibility to new movies and things like that, we only watch a few per month so it makes more sense for me to skip out on the DVD by mail service and just grab new release DVDs from Redbox for $1 per night.

That's where I think Netflix could succeed: Adopt a Redbox-like element to their streaming service. Continue to give us a ton of streaming shows, movies, etc for the $7.99 price per month like they do now. Plenty of good content to draw in base subscribers. On top of that, create an premium, on-demand feature like Vudu.com that includes new releases & movies not normally available in their streaming plan, but price it at $1/day per title which is the price of a Redbox rental. Vudu charges up to $5.99/day for HD rentals which seems like a total ripoff. If Redbox can generate profits renting physical DVDs for $1/day, why can't Netflix do it via streaming?

I'd much rather pay $1 extra to rent a premium movie and stream it. I'd get the exact movies I want, when I want them, without spending a ton and at the same time Netflix profits and stays in business. I think this addition streaming income would help them secure better deals with studios and expand their offering.

Re: “Responsive Web Design” Book Review

I am really looking forward to reading this book. As a freelance web biz owner, I need to stop working so hard to try to become "rich" but instead do things RIGHT NOW to live a rich life. That doesn't mean doing away with all structure and responsibility, but leaving flexibility in my schedule to try new things, push the limits of my ideas and creativity, and heck just do fun and meaningful stuff with my getting-old-too-quickly kids.

Super excited to read Todd's book, by the way. I've been a big fan of the Accidental Creative podcast which is always a nice shot of honest, to-the-point inspiration.

Re: Catch my video chat with Dave and Brian on Freelance Jam

Thanks, Phil! He seems to be genuinely sorry about what he said, but he still has to face the consequences and I think he's accepted that. However, I feel that a $50,000 fine is more than fair for a player whose salary is $3.1 million for the season. Kobe, on the other hand, has a $24.8 million salary - now that's a crapload! So I would say that Noah's penalty hurt a lot more than Kobe's. Also, Kobe's remarks were directed at a ref. I know the league has really been trying to cut down on that type of thing, so Kobe's was almost a double offense by 1) what he said and 2) who it was directed towards.

The bottom line is: I really hope the Heat lose. :) lol

Re: http://garyvaynerchuk.com/post/5645593686

Facebook...LinkedIn...Google...Microsoft...Skype...I'm dizzy, Gary! :)

Re: Was the White iPhone 4 Release a Victory?

It's been great. This is a somewhat small town (about 7000) and a small space (capacity of about 10 folks at any given time), but we have about 6 full-timers and a few part-timers and drop-ins. Definitely better than working from home. :)

Re: Was the White iPhone 4 Release a Victory?

I helped start a local coworking space last year here in Grand Rapids, MN: http://commonspacegr.com

Re: Was the White iPhone 4 Release a Victory?

A very similar thing happened to me last week. I stopped being able to hear voice calls on my current smartphone (Palm Pre Plus) - second time it's happened. Last time, Verizon just replaced it. This time I asked if I could upgrade and they said that would be fine. So I ordered the white iPhone 4 as well. Yeah, the 5 should be coming out soon, but who cares? The latest and greatest is always coming next. Will just be nice to (finally) be using an iPhone on the Verizon network.

Coincidentally someone else at my coworking space had the exact same thing happen this week. She is now sporting a white iPhone 4 as well.

Re: New Tools

Glad you're finding those Gmail apps/plugins handy, Jeremy.
