We had software blockpoints every three months, and before virtualization, updating developer machines was a lengthy task that could take anywhere from three hours to three days. After, we were able to install new VM images in a few minutes, which enabled weekly builds of the environment.

Re: The iPad Is Airport and TSA Friendly

Interesting, as I've been told I have to put my Kindle in a tray for separate scanning. This after they recognized it in a scan of my carry-on, asked if it was a Kindle, and I said yes. I think the primary rule is there are no rules.

Re: iPads Arrive Early!

Hope you got Apple Care, Daynah! I understand those April 1 iPads can be a bit dodgy!

Re: How Long Have You Owned Your Camera?

Currently using a Canon 50D. Got it after using a friend's 5D Mk II, but sadly deciding I couldn't justify spending that much.

Re: Welcome to College

Congrats, Daniel. You may find (as I did) that one of the most fun and enlightening parts of the college process is taking a commercial-off-the-shelf education and reshaping it to your needs and interests. Hack your learning!

Re: First Impressions of the Barnes & Noble nook

Very cool review, Jess, and I'm glad you are entirely pleased with the nook! I've had the chance to use all the major Kindle releases in the last two years and I really love dedicated eReaders (although I find the Kindle for iPhone app pretty great as well). I hope you're right about some cool innovation coming from the Android developer community. I'd love to see the nook make some very creative use of that touchscreen!

Re: Live from Virgin America #24 (Scripting News)

My mom also turned 80 in June, and she passed away last weekend of pancreatic cancer, three months after she was diagnosed with it. We buried her yesterday and now life goes on as my sister and I clean up the house. I don't think any two people experience grief exactly the same way, so as much as there's a temptation to say I know how you feel, I resist it, because I probably don't. But from now on, hearing someone speak about losing a parent will always grab my attention in a way it didn't previously. I hope you find a peace with what has happened as easily as possible.

Re: Interview: Cali Lewis talks about GeekBrief, Old vs New Media, and Augmented Reality | social nerdia

Yeah, Cali's great. In January, I ran camera for her on some of her Macworld segments. We'd be running from one end of the convention hall to the other to get to the next interview on time, but if someone called out, "Hey Cali!", she would stop and have a real conversation with the person. She doesn't see herself as a "celeb" and she's kind of puzzled that other people do.

Re: Interview: Cali Lewis talks about GeekBrief, Old vs New Media, and Augmented Reality | social nerdia

Really nicely done interview. I try to check out most of Cali's audio, video and print interviews, and many don't draw her out the way you did. Many are just a superficial overview. You delivered the Cali I know, talking about the kinds of things she really talks about, even when there isn't a camera on her. Well done!

Re: MacMerc.com: MacMerc.TV: SuperDuper!

Yeah, okay, you talked me into it. I've actually had an unnaturally blessed life regarding total disk failure, but I know that means The Big One is getting statistically nearer and nearer. I use my Drobo for most stuff I consciously think of as valuable, but I know there are thousands of files that I don't think of that way, but would be very unhappy if they were suddenly gone. So, yes, I'll look into SuperDuper. Thanks for the tip and thanks for MacMerc.TV, which is far, far better than it has any right to be this early in its run.

Re: The Typical Shutterbug Community and Podcast is coming

Sounds like a good premise and a good plan, Victor. I'll be along for the ride. I've been a camera guy since I bought a Canon AE-1 when I was 14 (1979).

Re: Tech Books

Just checked my shelf, and yes, I still have Netscape Navigator 2.0 (from Netscape Press), and "DOS for Dummies", original edition (the first "for Dummies" book, circa 1993-ish).

Re: MacMerc.com: An early look at MacMerc.TV that's a late look at the Flip Mino

Rick, I had no reason to think I needed or wanted a Flip camera, and here you go and make it look so appealing. I love the flip out USB connector more then words can tell. Really nicely done video, congrats to you and Maria for a great piece of work. I'll be eagerly anticipating the next show!

Re: Max Murphy - Control Your Mac from Your iPhone

Thanks for the tip, Max! I'm experimenting with a Mac Mini as media server attached to the TV, and reading Mac screens from more than about 3 feet away is a problem. This might be a solution for that. I'm going to try it out.
