I bailed on Tumblr probably around the same time you did; when our music sharing community dispersed. I still really like to idea of Tumblr: an easy way to share many types of content (music, images, links, quotes) and a way to build a sub-community.

I’m hoping they can make a few good, early moves that may revive interest ... and maybe even bring our music sharing group back together.

I'm a big user of voice for short text input on my iOS devices. It's a big deal that's pretty much "there" though will continue to get better. And yes, I'm pretty good with dictated punctuation, etc.

As a not-very-good-typist, I'm also intrigued by dictation for long-form writing. But my mind doesn't work right ... I can't think/compose/dictate coherently and continuously.

I was quite taken by this post that suggests that dictating is certainty different but that sticking with it may have its benefits. https://cogzest.com/2012/03...

By the way, this was typed not dictated. Too long for me to think and speak at the same time. 🙄

I'm an all-in Spotify user and Spotify has great integration with Alexa/Echo (even setting is as your default music source).

And Sonos/Alexa integration is due this month (it's been announced by both companies). So soon it will be "Play my xyz playlist in the kitchen."

My other primary uses:

- adding todo's to Todoist (again, properly integrated)
- adding items to a shared family groceries list in AnyList (a bit of a hack using IFTTT and iOS Reminders)
- quick kitchen timers

I love that one. I participate in a number of startup events in Atlantic Canada (home of a surprising number of startups and some big successes (Radian6, GoInstant, etc)). It seems the focus of these events is on developing pitches, getting funding, etc. Sure, this is an important piece (at times) for startups but it seems to have become *the* topic for startups.

This is one of many improvements. The more I use it the more I think iOS 9 might be the best update they've done. A lot of small changes that improve the entire system.

Actually you can post from these apps. Spotify is native in Tumblr and I do from Rdio from time to time when I can't find it on Soundcloud. Unfortunately, the experience for the recipient varies depends on whether or not they're a subscriber to the source service.

I try not to. I know when folks embed from Spotify I can only play a sample. Too bad these apps (and the licensees) don't allow for a full, free embed to facilitate sharing. Dream on.

Yep, Friday mornings on Tumblr are one of my weekly high points and they make the world feel a little bit smaller.

"I've made a bunch of great friends this way. Some of whom I've never met in person." After sharing music with you and the gang for well over 5 years (almost 10?) meeting a bunch of you in NYC last month was particularly cool.

As a fairly advanced geek/power-user I'm probably not quite their audience, but I never understood the appeal of either of these guys. Mossberg in particular. Just never thought they were contributing a lot of insight in their reviews. I suspect this is more a matter of a developed "brand" that a lot of people went to and, I suppose, trusted.

I don't get it. Will they create a store and compete w/ Amazon? What about devices? Will books come in MOBI and EPUB and work on existing devices?

This just seems desperate.

Most damning, it's coming from a company that sells a hardcover copy of a book for $30.77 but charges $38.26 for the same eBook. I'd love an opportunity to hear a sr. publishing exec explain and defend that.

Yeah, my version of Mike's advice isn't that potential founders should take the alternative path he suggests. Rather, for a startup to make it all the way it will require some people that did take that other path and who bring a different set of skills to the table.

Something that's close to this but perhaps a little less "icky" is a vehicle called a "search fund". I think the idea originated at Stanford: http://www.gsb.stanford.edu...

The basic gist is that the investors are funding an entrepreneur's search for a company to buy, usually for 2 years and approx. $200k. Basically it's a bet on the entrepreneur before you're making a bet on a specific investment. My limited understanding is that investors then get a first option on the actual deal to buy the found investment.

Seems to be more common in private equity than in tech startups but it might have a roll. It might apply where you found a particularly strong tech entrepreneur who was still looking for their idea/company.
