i did reboot quite a fue times out of frustrations...

then i remember i had a custom built kernel, so i copied a fresh Kernel config file and build/installed it.
Now after a reboot it says the corrected Release :)

Sorry to bring update an old post, but i was working though your guide, to update from 6.2 to 6.3 ie
sh freebsd-update.sh -f freebsd-update.conf -r 6.3-RELEASE upgrade

but after completing everything the welcome promt still says 6.2 and
$ uname -mrs
reports
"FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE i386"
