That's why it is so important to study from more than one translation.

I appreciate the tension the scripture offers and have become increasingly suspicious of theology that tries to tie the Bible up with a neat little bow.

As someone who occasionally teaches the bible, I struggle with how to share this sort of insight with others without it undermining (their) view of the Bible.

Re: TV or Streaming?

We do not have cable or satellite. When he says "I'm one of you" I hear him saying, "I understand." Anyways, he is one of you, we are all one in Christ.

Re: Download iTunes 11.1.4 (32-bit) - Comments - FileHippo.com

This update would not install correctly and now my iTunes install is botched. This family is seen as a shining light of conservative Christianity on television - a place where Christianity tends to be marginalized or mocked.

So when one of these "heroes" gets in trouble for something they said, the natural reaction is to cry persecution.

Personally, I think the whole issue is much ado about nothing. It's a proxy for the whole "culture war" discussion. Famous people shoot their mouths off all the time. It's unfortunate anytime a very public Christian is seen as less than loving.

Most of all, I think I'm sad about the lack of nuanced conversation about issues like this. People are so quick to jump and take sides like it's some sort of civil war. I wish people would care more about being generous with others than rooting for their "team."

Re: Miniblog #276: Wanting to Let Go of My Faith

For me, I had to withdraw for a while when I got to a similar place you find yourself in.

I'm admit that I'm not well acquainted with the situation and only have seen a little bit of people's responses. I was speaking more to the overarching issue and our response to situations like this and not the specific issue.

I think many over reactions are limited to the emotional level. For instance, I have known men who have mentioned that they would enjoy murdering a rapist - having some sort of perverted sense of justice.

The only thing I can think of for this situation (SGM) would be for believers not to cast judgement on the heart intentions of the leadership. We don't have all the facts.

I'm speaking from a perspective of one who has both been physically abused in the past and someone who has served on staff at a church. I am well aware of the law and the critical importance and responsibility to be a mandatory reporter for all instances of abuse. If SGM is trying to hide behind the 1st Amendment, I believe that they are in error and should absolutely be investigated.

Hope that makes things clear. Sometimes I do a poor job of communicating where I am coming from. In an effort to make a consise comment, sometimes people misunderstand where I'm coming from.

Re:

I was speaking of over reacting, not asking for leniency or protection for those who are guilty. In our desire for justice we should realize that we should protect and deal appropriately with ALL involved.

N.T. Wright in his book Evil and the Justice of God makes the point that when it comes to evil in the world today says "we ignore evil when it doesn't hit us in the face. ...we are surprised by evil when it does. Third, we react in immature and dangerous ways [to evil]"

What I mean by crucify our own and some of my other comments is that we need to be careful that we respond to evil (because this is an evil!) in mature and appropriate ways. I suppose I was trying to be a moderating voice. It is reprehensible that churches and organizations try to cover up abuse, and I believe we need to have a conversation (and take action!) about these issues.

Re:

Matthew 18 is not about reputation. In our efforts to push back from and confront & deal with sin we need not crucify our own. I have been working through a book by N.T. Wright about evil and the justice of God and one thing I've learned is that we can over (and under) react to sin and evil in the world (and church). I think a discussion is in order for how we deal with all matters of abuse in a way that most honors God. That is exactly what I think Rachel is planning on doing with this series. I'm looking forward to it.

Re:

But things like spiritual abuse are not (maybe they should be). Even if someone is a criminal, I believe that there is a Christian response and a non-Christian response. How the Church treats its own sinners and criminals matters very much in our world.

Re:

There are those that believe that it is un christian to deal with any if these issues out in the open in front of the world.

Re:

One of my greatest concerns about sexuality in the church is that we allow ourselves to be defined by our sexuality instead of our identity in Christ. I hope that you will cover how sexuality can become an idol that can take the focus away from loving and following God.
