It's funny I had this very discussion with a colleague of mine. To be honest, many of us menfolk are ambivalent towards violence against women. We can talk about all other topics from police brutality, the latest hip hop album, sports, politics, foreign policy, and all kinds of things that are deep or not deep but violence against women? not a peep.

You know while i feel like her friends were wack, many did admit that they would ask her about specific details of her life and she would brush them off. Like folks asked her where she would work at and she would respond with "in the city." From experience, when people tell me this it usually means "none of your business" and i have learned that if someone really wants to tell you they would.

her ex'es were wack. the one dude was really arrogant when he said "she wasn't ready for the dream.." like really ?

I learned alot, though. Like what do i really know about my homies. Working as an investigator i learned that there are some details we won't be privy to because we didn't met at that time. Like for example, what college we might have attended. 10 years after that fact that detail might not matter.

its sad that she had these issues and i know people who go thru the same EXACT thing and don't say anything to anyone for several reasons. Much of it is because too many of us would rather not deal with it at all.

whats scary is that people fall off the map all the time and then pop up. i know quite a few people who do that from all walks of life. and there are moments when i wonder if they are okay but when i reach out, i get no replies. very scary

Ironically, Dickerson demonstrates the problem with the evangelical leaders: while they realize they are losing ground, they refuse to acknowledge that it has anything to do with their doctrine. They assume that its just on how they present their beliefs. So they just have to learn how to say "gay folks are going to hell" in a nicer way? This is ridiculous.

This can only get ugly and not because of the religious differences but because someone was feeding this info to the child and asking the child not to tell the parents. As much as we would like to avoid conflict in these kind of situations, it is inevitable.

My only gripe this, and Pinn does a wonderful job, is that he doesn't discuss WHY the church is so important to the AA community. While he brushes on MLK, he doesn't explain why the church was so important to the AA community during the Black freedom rights struggle. In the AA community, leaving the church is like spitting on your race. That's a tough thing to do.

I don't think it does. I find that more Christians just cut off another section of the Bible to ignore or join a church that is more inclusive or even worse, just ignore their preacher when they rail against gay marriage. People do it all the time. People are still part of churches that were instrumental in the Atlantic Slave Trade.

I just wanted to point out that Todd Burpo who is a pastor and the father of Colton Burpo actually wrote the book "Heaven is Real." I almost purchased the book when i noticed that. I quickly changed my mind since i have no doubt, that poppa Todd served a that plate of nonsense to his son.

I agree 100% with you on this. Our goal should be to help folks think more critically, ask more questions, and get rid of outdated ideas. I do feel that our community should be involved in more social justice issues as well.

He's young. So I expect this. Many of us make big life changing decisions when we are in college and then revert to being just like our old school parents when we leave. People get mad when i tell them i don't put much stock in what young people believe in because just like me, they are going to change their minds several times over throughout their entire lives. I can introduce you to several fundies who were hardcore atheists while in high school and college. It happens quiet often.

I notice that S.E. Cupp definitely makes the rounds on news talk shows. She usually says large amounts of things that I disagree with as an atheist while she is entitled to her opinion, I think that networks book her because she brings ratings. I see her niche though. She is one of those "atheists" who make "theists" feel better instead of one of us atheists who are "arrogant" and think we are superior to everyone. I get it.
