Having just moved from NYC (I missed the big storm), I've been looking for a replacement for the forums at Americanwx.com that covered the Boulder area weather. I'm thrilled to have found this site. Re: jay vs Kay I had the same issue! Is Kay really a more common name?

I was at one time an apple fanboy and I absolutely loved the iphones I owned, but over the last year I have become more annoyed by apple. My iPhone 4s fell apart like an old car and the many little software annoyances you touched on weighed on me. Although I don't think anyone can touch apple in terms of design, the gap in hardware on smartphones is closed. It is really just about software now and I would bet on Google writing better software and updating far more rapidly. That is why I switched to android about a month ago. I love it and am very impressed with all that you can do. Is it perfect? No. It still requires a lot of customization (and I was horrified by the junk software that came preloaded from the carrier, something apple would never allow), but if you are willing to do the customization work, you will absolutely love it.

Re: Grateful

Thanks for sharing Alex, really appreciate it. She really loved the ocean, and walking along the beach.

Do you remember what she said?

Re: Revisiting Mental Renewal

Great post. I too have found a lot of value in my "morning sit." It's difficult, and I don't always feel great immediately after but I do feel it has a true impact on my day.

I love the sitting outside with a notepad. I feel, for me, that I don't have enough time where ideas can bubble up. I feel like 95% of my day is filled with incoming stimulus (music, emails, chats, calls, chatting with my wife etc), in fact I think that smartphones may actually be eating up the "aha" moments. Instead of our subconscious popping a great idea in silence, it's being drowned out by a quick check of twitter on our iphones. I guess we need to be more proactive about creating the space and the quiet. That's a great practice.

Re: When Did Taking Vacation Become A Big Deal?

Bravo Tim, Bravo. Brilliant post and I agree 1,000 percent. It's funny that Kevin and I discussed this via email last week.

There are so many "business" reasons why vacations are great, and you and Kevin have already touched on them (it's a break, it's space for good ideas to bubble to the top, it's time to recharge, etc), but my favorite honestly is the one you listed at the end: they're fun. As a crazy CEO I used to work with (who never lived by this, but loved to say it): "we work to live, not live to work."

No matter how wonderful your job is, no matter how much you enjoy doing it, you need break. Even more importantly you need to live, to spend real time with your family, explore, disconnect, and create memories. No one ever says on their deathbed: "I wish I had worked more, I wish I had skipped that vacation for another week of work." (Reminds me of this post: http://www.inspirationandch... .

I love to be part of an organization that really understands and embraces this..Thanks so much for this post Tim.

Re: Learning to “Think Different” about Life

Great post...very well written and I especially enjoyed the last paragraph. It reminded me of this Michelangelo quote:

“In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.”

The goal is to not get people to become something they are not, or feel bad about who they are. The goal is to help others strip away the "rough walls that imprison," and reveal the person they are born to be.

Re: If you were 24 and had $200k in spare cash, how would you invest it?

Very good post Jon. I too was in somewhat of a similar situation, and I think your tips are great ones. I would reiterate your point about investing in yourself, particularly in terms of physical and emotional health. I feel as the money provided the space to really develop a better understand of who I am, something that I believe makes me well prepared for whatever life has ahead of me.

Investing in yourself, I would add, is much more difficult than it sounds, or at least it was for me. I just had to remind myself that the return on that investment would always be significant.

Re: The magic wand – do overs

and for the record I don't think eating 12 oreos is bad and wrong. I think
it's totally understandable...but for the sake of my argument and in the
context of your diet, it's considered bad and wrong.

Re: The magic wand – do overs

Maybe that's really the key here, detachment. Maybe the playfulness for me
isn't coming from the idea of do overs, it's coming from the detachment of
my personal worth to my actions and outcomes. Holy crap is life heavy and
scary when your worth is directly related to what you do. Eating 12 oreos
is bad and wrong, so you, Jerry, are bad and wrong. I've lived under this
philosophy before, it sucks. But now in a do over it seems like it's easier
to separate the eating of 12 oreos, a mistake, from who you are. So maybe a
do over makes detachment from outcomes easier?

just thinking out loud here.

Re: The magic wand – do overs

Yes I saw those comments on your post (you get a ton of great comments by
the way) after I posted this. I think there is a some risk in that if
someone knows they have a do over, then perhaps they may not do it "right"
the first time. However, as you touched on much more eloquently than I will
here, the risk of not doing at all due to the fear of mistakes is far
greater than the risk of not doing it "right," the first time. It may be
different for everyone, but I know for me the right approach is playful and
experimental, which requires the right to do overs.

As you mentioned in your comment, the best of all motivations is self-love.
For me the concept of do overs is an important part of that. I've spent
way too much time beating myself up about mistakes I've made, things I've
said, things I didn't do. I would say that weight, which is cumulative,
does far more to prevent my best than the do over policy ever has. For me
the do over has lessened that weight of the past, and most importantly makes
it possible to detach outcomes and actions from self-love. It's not what
you do, it's who you are, right?

Re: Grandpa’s Rules of Success

"By the way, if you had a nickel for every time I cited YOU as an ideal entrepreneur, you'd be rich."

I'd go further to say that Steve would be rich just from the number of times Jerry has cited him as the ideal entrepreneur to me.
