They'll let you down before the game usually, particularly the aisle between 110 & 109. Some of the players are accessible, particularly Granderson, Nimmo and Flores. They'll come over to sign balls and stuff after they finish their warm-up. Hold your daughter so they can see her. Don't know if you saw this write up on 538 today -- http://fivethirtyeight.com/... -- based on Statcast data, but it helps augment your point about approach and adaptability. The stats seem to suggest that swing plane and lift -- an launch angle of 10-25 degrees enhances the scoring value of a batted ball, regardless of exit velocity. Hitting the ball hard isn't always as good as hitting it over people's heads.

Re: MMO Game Thread: Mets vs Royals, 4:15 PM

Somebody was pumped up. He says in Rubin's piece, "I might be hunting next year."

2. The organization leaks that it is considering bringing Backman up.

3. He says in Rubin's piece that he wants to be in the majors -- that's every coach's goal.

So, Backman has probably said, I've been a good soldier and I want my next opportunity.

BUT, the logical place for him is bench coach. Mets would need to fire Geren. That's not going to happen. So they leak that they are trying to figure out where to out Backman, but in the end he's going to get squeezed. And he doesn't want another year in the minors. He needs to be on a major league bench to get considered for a managers job.

The Rubin interview is so candid because Backman knows he's out of options with the Mets and he wants his POV out in public. It's essentially a signal to all the other MLB teams.

I wouldn't be surprised if after the season it's announced that he's moving on.

And that would be a shame.

Re: Wally Backman Weighs In On Mets Prospects

Right there is why it feels like Backman will never manage the Mets: he's clear, concise, has a strong point of view, is direct and matter-of-fact. What do you mean? I asked. He talked about how much fun the weekend promos are, how he could run on the field, how the players are always going to hospitals and stuff, how they were hosting a sleep-out this weekend.

He wouldn't dream of missing a game. He is invested in the young players. He loves David Wright.

Our experience as Mets fans has taught is to temper our enthusiasm in advance of disappointment, but my son reminds me that hope had its own reward -- the intensity of the moment. He likes the Mets. I like the Mets. And he helps me enjoy what is turning out to be an interesting season.

Re: Julian Gross

Great illustration, JT. I agree that ad-based media, like any intermediary service, presents some inherent conflicts for strategy. But I think that there's something fundamental going on with customers that influences all strategic approaches. I am not doing a good job of explaining it, though. This change is reflected in the emphasis many companies have around customer experience planning and a similar emphasis on strategic narrative, with story at the core of strategy. These developments reflect a reality that "compelling value proposition" as a differentiator creates weaker bonds and competitive barriers than in the past. My thinking here is very influenced by McGrath's The End of Competitive Advantage. Necessity is a plastic concept that incorporates the actual and perceived needs of the customer, and that anticipates that customer definition of necessity will shift as the product/service experience deepens. This has fascinating implications for product life cycle, development paths and the entire go-to-market strategy. We've been doing some of this work with a direct-to-consumer client in the financial services industry and it has been very powerful for them.

At any rate, it's an idea that I know academics and big consulting shops are tackling in a more systematic way. To that end, I appreciate your adding your voice.

Dan
