I know, I know, humorless feminist alert here. BUT the rest of the verse is actually kind of great, if only because how many musicians (of ANY genre) reference MoMA and Larry Gagosian and address how whitewashed the standards of beauty are in the media and the art world? Huh.

Re: Run This Town

Beautiful! I had a few questions: How is Something New an assault on black people's psyche? It was put on the same level as Monster's Ball and Precious. Why? What would a true "Black Hollywood" look like to you? Or, to put it another way, what would an active, healthy black cinema culture look like in your view? And how would a black cinema culture survive in a climate that's based on turning a profit, rather than making art? Finally, I think this essay, which covers the same points you covered, is a great read as well: http://exittheapple.com/ind...

Re: Night Catches Us [review] » The Liberator Magazine | Blog

"I think we sometimes get caught up in the sound and the fury of the time: black fists in air, black berets and fatigues, shouting “power to the people,” etc. We forget that most of the actions of the Black Panthers and other socially conscious groups were designed to address very real needs."

This. Yes. I loved Night Catches Us. I think what I appreciated the most about it was, of course, the humanizing aspect and also the fact that it's a quiet, engaging, well-told story. It's slow-moving; there aren't many quick cuts; the camera lingers for longer than most Hollywood movies. I didn't want it to end. I only hope that it doesn't take director Tanya Hamilton another ten years to raise the funds for her next feature.

Re: Heroes: Talismans of power; Beautifully human, complicated and contradictory » The Liberator Magazine | Blog

"At other times, it may be helpful to see our heroes as humans so we can realize our own power to move mountains. "

This. This is so important. A lot of times, I think we might feel we can't do what our heroes did precisely because we put them on a pedestal. We think we can't get there, we can't do what they did. When, really, we all have that potential inside of us. And Rosa Parks is a great example. She actually worked with Robert Williams (author of Negroes With Guns, advocated armed self-defense, inspired Huey Newton in the 70s) and was a Black Nationalist. She was an activist, not just a tired seamstress. Her story is very complicated. I have to find the exact quote but Huey even said something about the power of symbols in Revolutionary Suicide; saying to the effect he didn't want to be a symbol because people would relate to him differently.

With that said, I do keep various symbols around places I live and work to keep me inspired. Coltrane is a huge inspiration to me and I have his photo on my wall to remind me to keep striving and pushing, never to settle.

Re: Eartha Kitt on love » The Liberator Magazine | Blog

I think Kitt was more addressing the fact that women are expected to be the ones who compromise more than men. And even though we're about a decade into the 21st century, many times women are expected to...I don't know, give up more things than men are when it comes to relationships. And I don't think anyone was saying we have to try to emulate the past. (Unless I missed something?) For Eartha Kitt to be Eartha Kitt, a lot of specific things had to happen; things that were specific to her time and cannot be replicated.

But that example of being fearless, of basically saying, "Respect me for who I am or roll" is powerful to hear, especially from a black woman, and especially a black woman who came of age in mid-20th century America. You can demand respect and still share the love a partner has for him/herself and while sharing the love you have for yourself.

I wonder if the interviewer would have asked that question if he was talking to a man.

Re: Indigenous wisdom » The Liberator Magazine | Blog

Also, Ilsa_Solomon, you can always become a contributor to the Liberator. And thanks for the list. I picked it up at Busboys one day, read the first few pages, and then I just couldn't put it down. It's so beautiful. Mengestu has a very lyrical way of writing, and by the time I finished, I felt like the characters were old friends. He also has a new book out, How To Read The Air, which I also saw at Busboys.

Re: Sidewalk stories [visual art] » The Liberator Magazine | Blog

Yes, the physicality of the albums and slides holds great appeal. You're paging through someone's life, watching it unfold one page at a time. It's far more intimate than scrolling and clicking through Facebook albums on a computer or a smart phone. You're right, it is a magical experience. I need to start talking to archivists as far as how to preserve digital memorabilia.

Re: http://tobia.tumblr.com/post/1183711054

You met Kara Walker??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! The perfume recipes sounds very interesting and I can make that honey face wash right now. One thing I've noticed that works great for my hair is co-washing, that is washing my hair with a combination of baking soda and conditioner. The baking soda cleanses and clarifies the scalp and the conditioner keeps it soft. Shampoo was drying my hair out like you wouldn't believe.

Re: My life, thus far… (Part II)

I'm excited for you.
