Hi,

I used to work in finance (due diligence, senior lending, M&A, PE stuff - not trading) and left my job in June 2008 to do TicketStumbler.

Although I really liked my coworkers & bosses and certainly couldn't complain about the pay, it's looking like I'm going to make significantly more money (we're already profitable) doing TicketStumbler. Work is a lot more fun and interesting as well.

I agree with your trader comment though; if the individual was making the firm money on a consistent basis, there's always place for him somewhere.

Great post. The friend of friend model can be frustrating, but at the same time would you date someone (or really, even respond to someone) who emails you randomly wanting to meet? It's not hard to argue that investing in someone or some company is even more intimate than dating.

You're right though, with costs plummeting and more early stage firms emerging things have become much easier. Additionally, founders can work most ideas in to a usable prototype taking little to no funding. Now for YC, the competition, cloning and shift towards early stage investments has to be frustrating, but for would-be founders, it's awesome
