The friend of friend model can be frustrating, but at the same time would you date someone (or really, even respond to someone) who emails you randomly wanting to meet? It's not hard to argue that investing in someone or some company is even more intimate than dating.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You're right though, with costs plummeting and more early stage firms emerging things have become much easier. Additionally, founders can work most ideas in to a usable prototype taking little to no funding.
