Is that higher than expected? Sounds likely but without the proper reference data I can't say for sure.

Re: http://pullingthingsapart.com/post/3515437811

Congratulations!

Re: http://pullingthingsapart.com/post/2859751416

i believed it right through "where yer nuts hang" and the belch, but "bunghole"? Pro: fun to say out loud. Con: already used in UK with opposite meaning (although this could also be seen as a pro.)

Famble. Pro: might actually be used in conversation. Con: very close to words with similar meanings (mumble, ramble…).

Fash. Pro: sounds like it's short for fashion(ista). Con: sounds like it's short for fascist. ("She's such a fash." Is she a fashionista, a fascist, or a turnip top? Hint: context.)

Featlet. Pro: ? Con: useless.

Feer. Pro: conjures wonderful childhood memories. Con: sadly, i don't do much leaping forwards these days.

Ferly. Pro: awesome. Con: as with several other options, rarity of usage reduces likelihood of successful reintroduction to the common lexicon.

Flantum etc. Pro: actually using it in conversation will make people think you've gone mad. Con: actually using it in conversation will make people think you've gone mad.

Flippering. Pro: actually fills a hole in the lexicon. Con: already means something else ("and with that, my sister's goldfish flippered its way down the drain.")

Flizzen. Pro: actually fills a hole in the lexicon. Allow me to return the favor and suggest something that sounds like it might be up your alley: an acquaintance of mine has just published his first novel, "The Selected Works of T. S. Spivet," by Reif Larsen. I haven't read it yet, just picked it up this weekend, but I think it's about a child prodigy mapmaker, and it's got a jacket blurb by Stephen King so it must be decent.

Re: poor taste

dave brubeck was asked in an interview on NPR recently why he wrote this song in 5/4 time, and he basically said "because it's hard," and the next question was "why is it hard," and he said "because everyone learns to play in 4/4." which makes me laugh, and think that he's probably getting sick of that question...
but it's interesting to see how he and his group took that odd time signature and made something lovely and beautiful out of it, whereas radiohead picked it i think because it helped create a discomforting, disorienting mood. anyway, putting the two together was bound to happen, and yet genius at the same time.... the whole is greater than the sum of its parts

Re: poor taste

one wrong: i actually *under*estimated the troops killed in iraq. and apparently that's the Q the most people miss... for which i don't think I blame the people so much as the media. they stopped covering iraq at least a year ago, as soon as the prez campaigns got going.

Re: ragbag mailbag

"Johnson" is American for "Boring As Hell Last Name, Better Give Your Kid A Kickass First Name, Oh You Didn't Too Bad For Him". I started Great Expectations like three times and stopped due to boredom each time. Same holds for Moby Dick and Frankenstein, and having forced myself to finish The Idiot, I now have a similar prejudice against all the Russians. (They don't call 'em Russian novels for nuthin.)

On the other hand, there's no excuse for not reading Grapes of Wrath, Farenheit 451, Animal Farm, or Vonnegut. Any one of them will take you a single weekend and will be awesome, srsly. My crack book list currently dominated by more Steinbeck, Faulkner, and I wanna try the Crying of Lot 49...

Re: poortaste

is that the first recorded death by thc overdose?

Re: My favorite feeling

i used to see guys at urinals with their belts and top buttons completely open and wonder what the hell was wrong with them, until i got a pair of jeans with a button fly and realized how much easier they are to unbutton if you just start all the way up at the top.

Re: the onomasticon, part the second

I had to look another one up:
Ayn Rand - rhymes with "mine"

Re: miscellaneous epiphanies

words over which my darling wife has had similar epiphanies (definitely a subset):

Teetotaler is pronounced TEE-totaler, not tee-tow-TAILOR.
