I read slowly, too. I have a neverending summer list but I'm going to retry TBK, and I also want to finish Proust's Swann's Way because I (shamefully) chickened out of my reading group with Tess last year. Gahghh.

That's what it looks like! At least, that's what I'm hoping for - it seems as though there are more than a few people who are also rereading IJ (not just cracking it open for the first time), so if you've already finished it before, you should start again!

I don't think any city has "a distinct lack of character". The only true downside that I see to this situation is the two-year commitment (which, as you said, could eff up your grad/med school timeline). Sure, you'd have to leave Baltimore, but it's not permanent and you're still a Young Man... temporarily moving away from the one place you've lived your whole life is not a bad thing!
