Another thing -- if NB Forrest's slaves joined the Confederate Army on their own free will, why was he paid for their service in the military? Because they were slaves forced to work. He basically hired out his slaves to the Confederacy and was paid. Owners often rented their slaves. The Confederacy actually kept slave payment records. An historian has looked over all of them, and Forrest is on the list. The payments went to the OWNERS (rental fee) not the slaves (which would have been salary - and contrary to the concept of slavery). They were forced to serve, just as most historians have found. Of course, Southern whites love to promote mythology about slavery and segregation (blacks just loved both, and neither was racist). You can promote as many lies as you want, but the truth is not impacted by your fake news.

Saying things were "like that in the past" does not make it "good treatment." You are also overlooking the fact that it was not like that everywhere, as some parts of the country evolved from the barbaric practice. Men could legally beat their wives in the past too.
