Pinter performing Beckett is an image that says a lot to me about
where his writing was coming from as an actor in the theater and cinema and
as a reader. There were several more straightforward biographical images in
the linked article, but this is the one that struck a chord with me.

Re: Can someone recommend

It may sound banal compared to ambien or zaleplon, but Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is great for occasional insomnia. It has been around for a while and you are not going to get any surprise long or short term side effects like you might for newer drugs.

In my experience, melatonin only works well if taken daily, but the long term effects of melatonin use have not been determined so I stopped taking it a few years ago. One of the fun side effects of melatonin, especially if you have had insomnia for a while, is a very deep REM sleep that results in very vivid dreams.

I hope you get some sleep. If your insomnia is more than occasional, it would be worth the effort to figure out the cause of the insomnia if you can.

Re: Mass unfollowing

My experiment with the tumblr dashboard is coming to an end. Going through the posts in my dashboard is an increasingly joyless compulsion. It flattens the unique voices of the different writers into one bland flow. I also think that the way the dashboard encourages users to treat tumblr like a chat room and a blogging platform at the same time is problematic. I am going to go back to reading a few tumblrs individually so I can enjoy the flow of the different individuals posts.

Good luck with your studies.

Re: this is water, this is water, this is water...

A nice riddle and my pants are, so far, letting me down. The other three
quadrants address the ambiguity that is introduced when words have shared
pronunciations and\or spellings but not shared meanings. That ambiguity
doesn't exist in the fourth quadrant.

Synonym is the best I can do. It flips the bit on the third value, meaning.

I would love to learn the term that describes a pair of words that have
different spelling, different pronunciations, and different meanings.

Re: this is water, this is water, this is water...

I agree about the additional dimensions to words, but only the three were framed in the original post and they are enough to make a fun puzzle.

You have started with the most interesting example, all things being equal. This is the one that I woke up with this morning. It is most interesting if there are two words that are spelled the same, pronounced the same, and with the same meaning, but having totally different origins (etymological convergent evolution, here I contradict myself by introducing the fourth dimension, time\history).

Route (ow)\Route(ew) and Grey\Gray are two examples that come to mind for the other categories.

Re: this is water, this is water, this is water...

I submitted this to the hive mind to see what it produces. It is certainly interesting but I am going to have to file it for a while because the literature describing the Visayan\Basayan\Bisayan\Cebuano language family and sub families is full of metonymic substitution of terms creating a constant confusion about whether the language family, sub-family, or dialect is being referenced.

The word "among" exists in the Visayan language spoken in the Philippines and in some of the dialects (probably in the Cebuano family) also shares the same pronunciation and meaning as the English word despite being derived independently. There is a high probability that bilingual speakers of both languages exist despite the recent trend of decreased English fluency in the Philippines.

Re: the ragbag - “soup that eats like a meal”

Poke a few holes in some potatoes, rub a little oil on the skin and salt the outside to crisp up the skin and draw out moisture for that fluffy texture. Throw them in the oven for 45 minutes or an hour and you are in business.

Bake a few extra and put them in the fridge. Tomorrow you can slice up the leftovers and fry them in your cast iron skillet with some salt and cayenne and black pepper.
