Ms. Banks is predisposed at the moment (taking the bar exam as we speak) so I'll gladly field your question if that's ok. (there are a lot of lawyers who post here regularly actually so any one of us could chime in here regarding law school)

In college, the number one important piece of advice that I can adviser your daughter is to keep her GPA as high as possible. College major is irrelevant. Law School admission is based primarily on two factors and two factors only:

1. GPA
2. LSAT score

Thus, the higher she can keep both of those things, the more options she will have in terms of getting into a quality law school.

Around her senior year or so she would probably want to look into prep courses like Testmasters, Princeton Review, etc. for LSAT courses that will increase her LSAT score and then begin to make application to law schools. Law schools in general tend to admit on a rolling basis starting around the fall of the year immediately preceding the next academic school year. So for example, a student seeking to enter law school in the fall of 2010 needs to begin sending applications during the fall of 2009.

I would personally recommend taking a few years to work between undergrad and law school for a more well-rounded perspective and to gain work experience that legal employers will expect students to know, however many people go straight from undergrad to law school as well. Whatever works best for the applicant.

We constantly hear the birthers say "if he'd just show us [the long form/the original] this would be over."

Would it really though?

Actions speak louder than words. Stated differently, when we observe how these people are carrying on about this "issue" for so many months in a way that is most unusual with respect to your average President bashing, you really have to wonder - what is the REAL motivating factor here? Are thousands of people who, in all likelihood have never even read the Constitution, really that friggin interested in making sure that this President is in compliance with Article II, or, is the real issue here the fact that he's just not what they would like to see: a white male?

If it's the latter (and their behavior tends to suggest that it is), then even if he did as suggested here, came out on stage showing his original stamped birth certificate and the whole 9, it still won't change the fact that he's not a white male, and thus, won't end the birthers' recalcitrant behavior regarding this topic.

That being said, I agree that this is not one that should be swept under the rug given the momentum growing with the Birthers. Give them 3 more years to run their yap and who knows - it might cost Obama his second term.

Well let's be clear, it's not all Republicans - only 28% of them (which is bad enough as is).

In this low-information voter society we live in, even if they saw his birth certificate with their own eyes they would still rather believe the conspiracy theory. There's a quote that applies to this situation:

"When it comes to justice in America, there's what people want to hear, there's what people want to believe, there's everything else, and THEN there's the truth." (in that order)

Also, you have to figure that 9/11 and Obama's birth are two different things.

After 9/11 happened, if you dared utter something as crazy as "bush knew about the towers" then you probably got black bagged and hog-tied, thrown in a trunk, and deposited in a desert somewhere by the NSA.

Obama's birth, on the other hand, is not exactly a national security measure (although, the way these people are carrying on, it soon might be)

In addition to what The Fed points out here, consider the recent poll that was conducted on Obama's birth:

only 42% of Republicans believe that Obama is a natural born citizen, 28% said they did not believe Obama was born in the United States and 30% said they were unsure. Further, only 47% of respondents in the South (Democrats, Republicans and Independents combined) said they believed Obama was born in America, with 23% saying flat out that he was not and 30% saying they were unsure.

Those are some pretty amazing numbers.

By contrast, I seriously doubt you would have gotten a number as high as 28% of Democrats who actually believed that Bush brought down the towers.

So I think the number of Birthers seems to far outweigh the number of Truthers.

I won't throw anything past Bush but that would seem like an awful lot of lives lost just to prove a point that we need more security. I would hate to find out that he knew all along it was going to happen.

Did any "truthers" ever file MULTIPLE federal lawsuits in the Supreme Court of the United States (in addition to filing in the other federal and state courts across the country) alleging that Bush knew about 9/11 in advance?

On the same level of "evidence" that the Obama cases are based off of - lunacy!!!

But that's my point exactly - I don't think either one of them have a leg to stand on BUT the difference between the birthers and the truthers is that the birthers hate Obama so much that they are willing to take it to court, whereas the truthers weren't willing to take it that far.

When you think about it, to actualy sit down and draft a formal complaint and file it in a court of law more than likely means you are REALLY dedicated to whatever the heck it is you are trying to sue about. (either that or you just got a whole lotta time on your hands)

I've seen the complaints filed against Obama, they're not just some chicken scratch written out on a piece of notebook paper filed by some nut. These complaints are organized, they cite case law, they cite statutes, they site provisions of the constitution...I mean they're the real deal. They go IN!!!

I don't recall the truthers taking it that far so that might help answer your question as to why the media is treating this one differently than the other one.
