S.E. I normally love every single post you write and you've challenged my viewpoints many times in the past and made me a better person as a result. However, this particular post was pretty damn generalizing.

I own and show a horse, and I've been riding for over 15 years. I started out in the English disciplines and moved onto Western (reining) in the past few years. My family supported my hobby growing up on their working class income, knowing that it made me happy. My first couple of horses were in the $1-3k price range, and I have still never paid more than $6,000 for a horse in my life yet I show competitively. No, it's not as cheap as a dog or cat. But I have always been working class and always afforded a horse.

In addition, Western horse sports are very ingrained in Mexican culture. I live in San Diego and my stable is on the USA side of the Mexican border, but is so close that I can ride along the fence and see the Mexican children on the other side. My stable is a big part of Mexican culture. Mexican working class people own horses and train at our stable. Our main trainer (Manuel Campos) is a successful trainer and is Mexican himself. Many of our riders and members of the show team are Mexican, and no one on our show team is above middle class.

I'm not sure where you got the comment of "There’s not a lot of self-examination among many of the people who compete at and attend horse shows" from. Believe it or not, there's quite a bit of it. You happened to pick the most expensive and snooty (and problematic) equestrian discipline in saddleseat and then generalized all horse showing people under this same stereotype.

Actually, I have two trainers. A white woman (married to a Mexican man) and a gay white man. They are the ones hoisting the brown people on our show team into the saddle. We're all grooming our own horses, cleaning our own stalls, feeding our own horses. This post is valid for some disciplines (in particular the English ones) but misses the mark for those of us who ride Reining, Cutting, Roping and Cowhorse disciplines.

As someone who moved from SF to San Diego last year and ended up buying a 3bedroom/1bath house with a full 1br/1ba detached studio in the backyard..in one of the prime hip neighborhoods of the city (Normal Heights)..and has a mortgage less than most of these rents.... I am just very happy with my decision.

Thank you. I actually didn't think about what I was saying until reading your comment. I certainly do understand why I have to answer for straight privilege when I have the privilege of passing as straight. I forgot about the fact that privilege is something you have whether you want it or not, and that its still something I have to own up to.

I have to say that I'm seeing a lot of this lack of innovation in Facebook gaming, but the mobile game space has some truly great titles. Games are getting deeper and more meaningful, artistic and creative and inspired. On iOS, there are some games that give me 'whoa' moments. Swords and Sworcery is one of them. Pocket RPG was another one that felt deep and more than just a piddly pasttime. I'm excited and eager to move into the mobile games arena because so much is happening over there.

We have this concept of animals which are domesticated pet species, and animals which are "agricultural commodities". For most people, horses call into the 'pet species' category, even if they would never dream of owning one. We have a major pet overpopulation problem as well, including homeless animals on the street and overcrowded shelters. If we believe in allowing hunting of wild horses (or euthanasia of these horses), we should probably be okay with humane horse slaughter and putting shelter animals that aren't adopted to sleep via euthanasia.
