I hate that the viewpoints are often framed in a mutually exclusive way. You can be against police brutality AND also be against looting and vandalism.

It's already hard enough to own and operate a business under normal circumstances. Add to that the pandemic and now the looting. A lot of businesses, especially small ones, won't survive and the impacts on the city will be felt long after the chaos ends.

I'm glad berkeleyside is writing about Berkeley's Health Department. It certainly made me question its effectiveness and role in local/regional public health... and I'm still not convinced it needs to be a separate department

The numbers are "wrong" BECAUSE we took precautions.

If we hadn't take any actions, our number of hospitalizations and deaths would've been significantly higher. Just look at New York. Is that what you want?

for what it's worth, the newer model is supposed to be more durable and require fewer parts to maintain, so i'd imagine the operational cost would go down a bit?

"Country/city X is different" is lazy thinking. Yes, they may be different from the US, but it doesn't mean the solutions won't work. The least we can do is learn what works and adapt accordingly.

as hard as it might be for a non-milennial non-yimby to comprehend, most milennials are grown up and not blind to the benefits that a movie theater might bring.

however, downtown berkeley has more than one movie theater, so even if we lose one of them, there are still two others than can accommodate moviegoers. i'd rather have two movie theaters and a bunch of new housing units than three movie theaters and no new housing.

oakland has been building a lot of new housing and the rent has stabilized a bit. between 2017 and 2018, rent increased by 1%, compared to double-digit annual increase in years past.

rent has also stabilized in seattle, where there has been a lot of new housing built.

so yes, adding supply to housing markets where there's an influx of demand does help with rent. if you have evidence to the contrary, feel free to post them here.

jayakarta is pretty busy most of the time. exorbitant rent pushes out small businesses, even if that business seems to be doing pretty well.
