There is nothing much like real life in Sarasota, except during hurricanes. We have no media to call our own. We prize "art," but install idiocies in public places.The idea of a developer creating a show about young rich Sarasotans doing their thing, but having to move to Miami because Sarasota is, well, so utterly uninteresting, it's quite dumb as ideas go.

A recent 1000 Friends webinar discussed community design and how it affects mental and physical well-being. It was most interesting. Among the suggestions: Community gardens. Multiple walking paths to create more connections. Return to the wisdom of Jane Jacobs - build socially diverse, open communities rather than closed and gated monotonies. Our mental well being improves with the experience of otherness. Sameness dulls us.

Why should the public be excluded from discussions that are of general and intense local interest? If Tiger Bay wishes to be the organization to address an issue of this caliber, it should at least offer a zoom or webinar that would allow the public to hear and optimally participate in the discussion. This method of creating information siloes through clubs and paywalls is, frankly, de-democratizing.

In reality, this is a matter of fairness in votinjg structure. 14 of the largest counties in Florida have single member districts by common consent, not nefarious intent. Thank you for this superb voicing of something that is on the minds of many who live here. Not only are citizens' concerns about the submission of the public realm to private interests falling on deaf official ears, but even the public initiative to change our voting structure to Single Member Districts in order to make our officials more accountable has been described as "confusion" that the Board has refused to accept as the will of the people. Not only character and nature, but the fiber of our civic sphere is now, more than ever, at risk.

Mr. Bo Medred was the consultant who got a text amendment passed that reduced the distance a waste plant needs to be from residences. It applies to several areas of Sarasota County, yet at the Planning Commission, Medred was interrogated and admitted that he was only after enabling James Gabbert to build an 18 acre open air demolition dump at the Celery Fields. I wonder if Mr. Medred's point of view really should be given such weight in this matter.

The proper term for climbing with ropes is "rapelling." In a typical failure, this pretty fire station has no community room. Also, its lights are too bright for the nesting areas nearby. This needs dealing with.

It would be journalistically responsible here to clarify Mr. Schleicher's actual relationship to Netxtel and the other companies listed, and to explain what services Nextone LLC offers. Beyond that, some input from medical and business authorities regarding Mr. Schleicher's comments and the letter's wishlist of total financial absolution would be appreciated as well.

Where Trump's order links to his NationStatism, the actual signifiers of classical architecture do not. They link to a Greco-Roman vision of an interconnected world, that began with the polis. To this day, such buildings all over the world point to the logic of an order that transcended any particular nationhood. We need to dissociate classical form from Americana and bring it back to the broader Enlightenment ideals, to which Trump is anathema.

What exactly is Mote's justification for seeking $20 million in tax dollars for this showcase? Many in Sarasota feel Mote should keep its focus on science - studying the actual causes of Red Tide and ways to cope with it. As with Selby, it's as if the original, serious and significant mission of the institution is getting vaporized amid tourism, branding and marketing fantasies.

All the while Benderson Development has been trying to force this bloated plan into this sensitive area, it has ignored 40 acres of prime land the county basically gave it ($3 million) near Fruitville road, a part of the already planned Fruitville Initiative. Great site for a mixed use development, with homes of various kinds coming in the other 150+ acres of the Initiative nearby. Why has Benderson ignored a great site in favor of this obviously ill-chosen alternative?
