Yes, there are people who hunt with them. If facts aren't an issue, and they don't seem to be, why not make an issue out of the video games you mentioned ?

Re: Gun Debate Must Avoid Crazy 2nd Amendment Claims

I think the problem we have is the word "arsenal" - it's a word that doesn't really have a quantitative definition. You might think that a guy who has 3 guns has an arsenal, where a lot of other people think of an arsenal as dozens or even hundreds of guns. The media tends to lean towards the first because they are more pro-gun control/pro-government than someone with a military background who has seen an arsenal as a building that holds hundreds of guns. To answer your question, I would toss out to you that an assault rifle in the US is more like a Camaro with a 4-cylinder engine. A legal "assault rifle" is a regular semi-automatic weapon with a fancy M16 costume. (or AK47, etc) A true assault weapon is fully automatic. It is illegal for just about everybody to own a full auto weapon. (you have to have very specific and very expensive permits to own a full auto weapon) Aside from the military, the police, specially certified people, and some specialized security people, the only people who have true assault weapons are criminals. Most hunting rifles are semi-automatic. Most handguns sold are semi-automatic. They reload automatically, but only fire one bullet with each pull of the trigger. Politicians bought a lot of votes campaigning against "assault rifles" and banking on the ignorance of the voters. At the same time, they don't push to disarm criminals, gangs, drug cartels operating in the US, organized crime, etc.

Re: Gun Debate Must Avoid Crazy 2nd Amendment Claims

I would ask you a few questions. First - how many people do you think actually have an "arsenal" of weapons at their fingertips ? (I would tell you that it is a very small number) Second - how many of these people with an "arsenal" are the ones who lose their minds and go on a rampage like this ? (I would suggest...none). And finally - why do you think that many of the people who actually do have what you would call an "arsenal" are doing it for any other reason than they fear what this government is trying to do ? (I would suggest that if our government would adhere to the Constitution, stop trying to micro-manage everybody's lives, and go after the criminals - they wouldn't feel the need to have a stockpile of weapons. I would also remind you that there are people who own what you would likely call an "arsenal" simply because they enjoy shooting a variety of guns.)

Re: Gun Debate Must Avoid Crazy 2nd Amendment Claims

Typical liberal drivel. Fools who believe that this government, or any government, can be trusted to limit itself to what it is constitutionally allowed to do. Add to that, a bizarre idea that people shouldn't have to control themselves. "Guns don't kill people - people kill people" may be a silly sounding platitude, but it is still true. This useless academic - Cass Sunstein - has only provided another object lesson in the abject stupidity of the liberal mind. Instead of pushing people to be better, to be decent people, to respect each other and themselves - the liberal mind comes up with the idea that if this object isn't around, the whole world will magically become a better place. If guns are taken away from law abiding citizens, nobody will ever kill anybody again. This is an amazingly stupid idea - BUT - it does give the government that has already proven that it can't be trusted, even more power over us. Wake up, America. Disarming people who don't break the law doesn't solve the problem. And for you idiots out there who think that the NRA is the focus of evil in the world, you should spend a few minutes learning what the NRA does. They constantly preach safety and responsibility with weapons. Sorry, Mr Sunstein, you are wrong. Getting rid of an object doesn't fix the basic problem - that people aren't expected to be well mannered towards each other anymore. Instead, people like you run to the skirts of a government that has become ineffective and in many ways dangerous to its citizens.

Re: This is important.

perhaps an accurate definition of "racist" would answer that question. racism is a belief in the inherent and genetic superiority of one race over another.

Racism is NOT a one way street - white people are not the only people who can be racists.

Racism is NOT a general dislike of people of another race. Nor is it the pre-judging of people of another race. Those words are bigotry and prejudice.

Back to the question - and answering a question with a question....Are you KIDDING ME ? There are real racists in this world - don't waste your time trying to label an imaginary slight that might be racial as "racist".

If you need another clue - the man wants to buy an NBA franchise. In case you haven't noticed, most NBA teams are at least 80% black. A racist wouldn't be investing in a business that makes multi-millionaires out of people he thinks are genetically inferior.

Re: Labeling the US Open Pairings

Are you SURE you didn't start happy hour earlier than scheduled ? Stephen Ames and Stuart Appleby ? Are you kidding ? My definition has to do with taste and flavor. Not "presentation" and how little you can put on a plate to charge $100+. I love barbecue and ribs and southern cooked vegetables (except okra).

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

I never said that I hate the sport. Don't always undestand the rules - hate the constant flopping - but there are only so many hours in the day and there are other sports I'd rather watch. I'm sure I'll catch bits and pieces during the tournament - but probably not an entire match. My brother has a friend who is Scottish and a coach on the professional level. He tried colleges here in the States, and even started an academy in Oklahoma (go figure) and gave up because the kids didn't want to learn the game the "proper" way - they wanted to play American style soccer - not the most intelligent style in the world.

Re: Tiger’s Greatest Hits

lol - Steph - you are dead in the middle of the most letigious city in America. God I hate New York City and that mentality. It's so "normal" to think things like that, that it is almost humorous.

By the way - Tiger, like almost every pro, stops to talk to a person who gets whacked by one of their golf balls.

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

I guess I'm just not sold on the level of exhaustion these guys reach in a game. I get tired of hearing people say that it is 90+ minutes of non-stop running - complete nonsense. It's more like 90+ minutes of running, walking, and standing (with a few flops mixed in) plus a 20 minute halftime rest. There is a lot of walking and standing around mixed in with the explosive bursts and medium paced running/jogging for positions.

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

DOH ! You're right - bad math on my part.

I wasn't suggesting a match every day or two - but three days rest should be plenty in the first round. Play every 4th day and you're done with the first round in 9 days.

But the BIG question is...why the heck am I asking these questions in the first place ? I won't even be watching ! :-D

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

32 teams - 8 groups of 4 playing a round robin - that's three first round matches. According to the schedule, they are using 9 pitches. (HA ! didn't think I'd know that term, didja ?) :-)

The 9th field makes no sense - but you're spreading hundreds of thousands of fans out. Even if you rotate matches inside of groups to different stadia, South Africa isn't that big of a country where travel would be a huge problem.

Play 2 matches a day on each pitch and the 96 first round matches are done in 10-12 days. This schedule has teams waiting a week between the first and second matches, then playing the third 5 or 6 days after that.

Sounds like one of the old Murphy's Laws where the time it takes to complete a job expands to fill the time allotted. :-)

lol - yes - the bunkers to plinko illustration was mine, but I don't understand how it fit into this. (by the way - I wouldn't change a single bunker on the Old Course - then again, I was only in 2 of them.

Re: Olympic Trials: Jack and Annika Have Designs on Course

Darn right there would be red tape...kidnap victims have to be relocated, marijuana and poppy fields replanted...it's just one headache after another. :-D

Leave it to David Fay to downplay the American entry in the process. Personally, I'd rather the contract not be given to Nicklaus. The man is all about the contract and expanding his portfolio. Even the NBA doesn't make teams wait that long. The finals started with 2 games in LA four days apart, then they flew across country to play 2 days later. Makes no sense.

I admit that I'm not much of a soccer/fubol fan, but I do admire the skill and teamwork it takes to make a good team.

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

He didn't say that the only matches he was interested in would be the Aussie matches...but dang...you sure make sense. If the US Open turns into a birdie fest, you don't find out who the best golfer is. But if you put that little mental tweek in there and they don't see all those circles on their score card, they start feeling it.

Another thing to consider about the long par 4's. When these clubs were designed and built, a 410 yard par 4 was a driver and a 5 iron or more. These days, 410 yards doesn't even get the driver out of the bag. Mickelson hit 2-iron / 8-iron at 18 last Saturday on an uphill, 444 yard hole. (I think it was playing 420-something that day - but still uphill) In these days where just about everybody in the field can crank out 300 yards off the tee, a 500 yard par 4 is...driver / 4 or 5 iron....and even less for some of these guys. Just the way a long par 4 was supposed to play 60 years ago.

Re: Nathan Green’s Priorities: World Cup Beats Out US Open

no doubt - though it is surprising to see a pro athlete admit that he doesn't have a chance to win and he would rather do something else - especially in a major. It's not like he's having to fly around the world to get here.

Oh well - opens up a spot for someone else. Too bad it isn't Justin Rose.

Re: Nathan Green’s Priorities: World Cup Beats Out US Open

No doubt - the US Open can be the toughest of the setups - but they are much more playable over the last few years with Mike Davis doing the work. The days of knee high rough at the edge of the fringe are over.

The idea that the USGA is "protecting par" is pretty much gone, too. You won't ever see the dead greens like we saw back in the 90's, and the rough is much more managable than it used to be.

The British has its own oddities, too. Between the wandering burns and those bunkers that are 6' deep and 4' in diameter and scattered around the fairways can make a course play like a Plinko game.

Re: A Fore Thought

I figured you were either intentionally ignoring the shoes because they are Crocs...or you have developed a sub-conscious blinder to not see them whenever possible. :-D
