Royal Mail has only been privatised a few months, but it's already been making noises about escaping the commitment to UK-wide postal rates.

Re: Investors pull £17bn from UK as banks ratchet up Scottish independence pressure

You've got your decimal point in the wrong place. UK GDP was approximately 2.522 trillion dollars in 2013. There's not much in it apart from a regurgitated press release from the obscure CrossBorder Capital and some unsubstantiated opinions. Then anything at all that can be presented as bad news seems currently to be blamed on the Scottish referendum, regardless of whether there is any evidence to link the two. In my ignorance, I struggle to know what this outflow means. The stock market has been slowly drifting upwards (the blips blamed on Scotland were minute), as are corporate bonds and gilts. And not much is happening in the housing market. So where is all this money coming from? Is it "hot" money in bank accounts? Does it matter much to most people where that flows? Is it connected with the welcome fall in the exchange rate, which improves the exporters' lot? And what evidence is there that it has the slightest connection with Scotland? All of which seem to cry out for some more substantial journalism.

Re: Investors pull £17bn from UK as banks ratchet up Scottish independence pressure

We're told this by "the world’s most authoritative financial institutions". Although they seem to have provided a download service, the drivers are not by Epson. If you ask Epson about Linux support for their printers, the answer is that they do not support any of their printers with any flavour of Linux. So if you buy an Epson printer and it doesn't work well with Linux, it's unlikely you'll get any help from Epson.

Re: Blog | The Moorsider

This will be about the environment

Re: http://www.moorsider.org/blog/2011/06/1/

This should be supported.

Re: Disqus spam

Why does this thread show as started by Daniel Ha?

I'm glad you're working on methods of filtering :) Any idea when this may bear fruit? This points to one of the key problems - misuse of helper methods often results in what is really a bunch of functions. Nothing wrong with functions, but they aren't OO!

Re: Web software on a VPS

Not really. The VPS has its own copies of all the services, and they can be reconfigured independently of other VPS on the same server. Only the basic operating system is in common. There is greater (though not complete by any means) independence from other users on the same server. Different management software (usually Virtuozzo) is used that is not present in shared hosting, and influences the environment.

Re: Building a PHP CMS

It isn't at a full release stage yet, but the Aliro project is thriving. Much of the work is currently going on behind the scenes, but the project profile will be raised significantly some time soon. The current code is obtainable from the subversion repository. It is inevitably a bit unstable, but usually it works correctly. You can find it from the Aliro site http://aliro.org. The credit card company wouldn't help me because they said the issue had gone outside the six month limit - on account of all the delaying tactics. But an American friend suggested to me that I could contact the Better Business Bureau at http://bbb.org and register a complaint with them. The company responded within the deadline given and offered a refund, which was then processed within 48 hours (which is the normal sort of timescale). Evidently, they do not want to have too many unresolved complaints at the Better Business Bureau. The BBB branch handling this company is in Richmond, VA. The magazinecity company has the lowest possible rating from BBB and you can see their report at http://richmond.bbb.org/WWW.... I would advise anyone who has difficulties with them to try a complaint through BBB.

Re: Joomla trademark in a domain name? | Mister Men - brian.teeman.net

The ruling is interesting and seems to follow fairly widespread practice. The Joomla! organisation creates additional problems by the form in which it requests permission be sought for use of domain names. It insists on a number of declarations. It's easy enough to agree that the domain will not claim to be part of the Joomla! organisation, and to agree not to use a domain for illegal purposes (if you did intend to do something illegal, would you say so?). But it gets difficult when you have to agree that the licence is revocable, so any value that accrues to the domain can be destroyed by OSM without notice. It's also a matter of real concern that applying for a licence risks ceding rights to OSM that it does not possess (at least according to the WIPO decision). So far as I can see, it is against my interests to apply for permission to continue to use domains registered some time ago, including the letters "joomla".
