Female toplessness is legal in NYC, but I don't have a yard here, nor do I have any lemonade. Having my brother in the photo wouldn't be awkward at all, though.

Re: http://mills.tumblr.com/post/454559967

No, it was pathetic, but we did it all day anyway. At the time we believed we could actually get rich.

Re: http://mills.tumblr.com/post/454559967

When we were little kids in Mississippi, my brother and our neighbors across the street (two boys) would set up the requisite summer lemonade stands, and when they'd take off their shirts, I would, too. My mom would always make me put mine back on, and I was too young to understand why. All I knew is that it was really fucking hot and I wanted to be shirtless and drinking lemonade, too. That photo is hilarious. I was always mystified by the sprinkler, too...

Re: http://mills.tumblr.com/post/439172572

The story of how I was turned on to Walker Percy is so long that I don't know where to begin. I will save it for the next time I'm in Louisiana to possibly tell you in person, or I'll just craft an incredibly long email one day. But no, I have not read A Canticle for Leibowitz, but I will.

Re: http://mills.tumblr.com/post/439172572

This is my absolute favorite section of this book. I love it so much that I can't reblog, like, reply, or photoreply enough, so I'll just leave a comment. The "reentry by disguise" makes me laugh every time. I love what he says "would-be artists" and "writer-types" typically wear: "More recently, it is jeans, beards, bandit mustaches, denim jackets, tank tops, longhorn belt buckles, and such."

(He more or less just described Williamsburg)

I want to give this book to everyone I know...

Re: http://mills.tumblr.com/post/437737488

My friend Carolina anthropomorphizes all objects. If there are two bottles of shampoo left in the store, she will refuse to buy one because she "feels sorry" for the other one. I will occasionally talk to my house plants, but that's because I live alone, don't have a pet, and can't seem to engage in any meaningful discourse with lone cans of Diet Coke. They don't have a lot to say back.

Re: mills baker -

I wish I had more to add other than "GEE, I SURE DO LOVE GOING TO THE MOVIES," but my brain is currently made of spinach dip. And Indian takeout. Please call the police.

I'm speaking more for myself, but maybe Mills meant that hated the kind of self-mythologizing and self-aggrandizing dreams that we all have from time to time. And when I do have those moments, I feel sort of embarrassed. I also have been known to peruse the Wikipedia page for Delusions of Grandeur. I'm fine though, really.

Re: mills baker -

How did I not know this? Did you know this?

Re: mills baker -

Nowadays when a person lives somewhere, in a neighborhood, the place is not certified for him. More than likely he will live there sadly and the emptiness which is inside him will expand until it evacuates the entire neighborhood. But if he sees a movie which shows his very neighborhood, it becomes possible for him to live, for a time at least, as a person who is Somewhere and not Anywhere.

Re: mills baker -

Actually Mills, I DID think "Man, I should get in touch with Mills and tell him to come to Middendorf's," but I was dining with someone who sort of ruined my life, and I didn't want to bring you into the tension. Not over fried oysters. Next time, though. Next time.

Re: mills baker -

"What has she ever done with her life that's so great?"

I realize I'm a little late on this train, but I'm gonna put in my hungover two cents. I had almost committed Tumblr suicide back in 2007 (what, I can't believe I've been posting on this thing since 2007?????), but then Mills came around somewhere and posted this:

http://cosmopsis.tumblr.com...

And I thought, "Oh. So I guess I should stay. I am apparently not alone."

THANKS, MILLS. And happy berfday.

Re: Life is hard. When news bits about the economy are on the screen, everyone just stares, sighs, and shakes their heads, and someone might even say "Awful...just awful" as he shoves his diamond-encrusted doughnut in his mouth and exits the elevator.

Re: mills baker -

I hate when that happens.

Funny--I think we had a brief exchange once about our fears of flying. My phobia has greatly subsided also--I've somehow gone from pathetically asking strangers to tell me I'm not about to die during turbulence to actually keeping quiet and enjoying the views/silence. I have to say, though, that as bad as my anxiety was, I would still board the plane. A friend of mine didn't even go to her brother's wedding (!) because she was too scared to fly to Hawaii.
