We don't eat fig newtons anymore because of the GMO ingredients. My Grandfather made amazing mandel bread and when I was 8, he taught me to make it. Grandpa added walnuts to his - delish. He also taught me to make cornbread and rice pudding. Thanks for bringing back this fond memory.

Re: Mix My Granola

Back in July, Melissa Clark wrote about an organic granola she tasted at a neighborhood gourmet shop. It was made by Early Bird Foods and she was hooked. I have ordered it online and while it is expensive, it is off the charts delicious! They make it with olive oil and salt! The sweet/salt ratio is perfect. She came up with a recipe to recreate it and we have made it many times - it's excellent, and healthy! Here is a link to the recipe:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009...

Re: more chicken?

We love chicken paillard. The best I've had was at L'escale in Greenwich, CT. Don't love their food other than this an an amazing herb omelet. They pound it to 1/8" and dip it in parmesan cheese before briefly sauteing quickly on each side. I juice and seed the tomatoes before chopping at this time of the year. Seems to bring out more tomato flavor. Looks great!

Re: Osso Bucco

Stupid me! I didn't read the last sentence where you said it was polenta, lol. Anyway, I made your Osso Bucco and it was terrific! I had some veal demi glace in the house so I added a couple of tablespoons to the dish. This is a keeper, thanks.

Re: Osso Bucco

My mouth is watering! They look delish! Did you make the risotto too? I've been trying to nail down my timing making risotto. I'm a pretty accomplished cook, but it's a challenge for me.

Re: The Palm

I enjoy going to the Palm in East Hampton. You have to be in the mood for classic steak house food. It's fun because it is old school. Best dishes:
Salads: The Gigi, Monday Night Salad
Entrees: NY Strip, Rib Eye, Prime Rib, Filet Mignon
Sides: Hashed browns, cottage fries, fried onions
Desserts: Chocolate Cake, Carrot Cake
The cakes are delivered frozen. Maybe the turn-over is not too quick out of season. I have actually ordered these cakes from the same bakery as the Palm and they were delicious.

Re: quick shrimp dish

While I like Food and Wine a lot, I adore Saveur. However, they don't seem to be carrying it anymore. They are currently selling their own brand of cocoa powder. I see that chefshop.com directly or through Amazon is carrying it in 2lb. bags. I used to buy it in cans in smaller quantities, and buy 6 at a time! I adore it.

Re: Shanghai Style Ribs

OMG! Somehow I missed knowing about this book. I read his other two and loved them.

When I was 11, my father died. I wondered how God could be so mean and cruel. Years later I read Rabbi Harold Kushner's book "When bad things happen to good people". I came to the same conclusion as Kushner - God cries WITH us when we are hurt. Wow, what a revelation! God is good. God is not the God of anger and retribution. It started me questioning my religion (Jewish). And through a lot of reading I have come to adopt a more new-age philosophy. Religion exists to bring people to a more spiritual place. That is the reason for all religions. Everyone has a different path to get to that place. At this time, my Jewishness remains in the form of traditions - holidays, food, and I light Sabbath candles to connect to and have a dialog with God, not because I am mandated to. Sorry for the rambling. You touched a cord.

Re: who are the role models?

...bowing.

Re: who are the role models?

We should be the role models for our own children.
