I've discovered that some publishers will not serve you feeds if you don't have a browser-like user agent.

NewsBlur gives you an identifier (NewsBlur Feed/Content/Site Fetcher), information about the feed (subscribers), and a decoy browser string. It's a mouthful, but it also works.

Re: Newsblur launches iPad app, aims to compete with Google Reader (exclusive)

To echo Chris's point about how little NewsBlur actually knows about you, NewsBlur is a new model of running a business. There is a level of transparency that you don't see elsewhere.

Consider that NewsBlur is open-source. That tells you that if you were technically able and wanted to know exactly what happens to your data, you can find out reasonably easily. Beyond that, most privacy policies are legal gibberish and only serve to cover the ass of the website itself. If I had to write a privacy policy, it would largely talk about how I don't double dip. In other words, I've already charged you for a subscription. That's why the first-class apps are all free, and why your data won't be sold to advertisers or marketers. You have an expectation that you can control your data, and if you wanted to leave NewsBlur, with the API you can take your data with you.

Re: Newsblur launches iPad app, aims to compete with Google Reader (exclusive)

This is a big release and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. That said, the next big launch coming up will involve a design refresh for both web and mobile. I'm meeting with our designers later today and hope to ship the best looking, most intuitive news reader within the next couple months.

Re: NewsBlur, mon alternative à Google Reader

Merci pour l'article!

Re: Knight News Challenge on networks - moving to the next round

I did some screen scraping and compiled a list of entries, sorted by # of likes, and then updated today to show the winners.

https://gist.github.com/215...

This shows the distribution of winners based on the amount of support they received in the form of likes. They were a great resource and I just loved watching for new stories in the Fiesta blog RSS feed. Too bad you weren't able to monetize the service. I found that people paying for services tend to also be more vocal about them, making word-of-mouth just a bit stronger.

Best of luck to both you. I'm excited to see what you come up with next.

Re: Daily Wrap-Up: No Alternatives to Google Reader and More

Want to see the mobile interface? I just have to finish the River of News and add in training and then it'll be a solid version 1. It is, however, available on the App Store now as a beta.

Re: 8 Google Reader alternatives

Sebastian, thanks so much for the write-up of NewsBlur. There's an iPhone app about 2 weeks away from release, and the future has a lot of goodies planned. NewsBlur is also open-source: http://github.com/samuelclay. There's a lot to be said about developing in the open, taking in contributions from the community, and having a fully supported API.

Re: 8 Google Reader alternatives

In NewsBlur, you can move the panes as well as hide them. (Hit 'u' to hide the feed pane, and the story titles pane can be moved in Preferences.)

It's only $12 / year and you get all of your feeds. The 64 restriction is so you can try it out before you buy. And as Sebastian mentioned, it goes a long way towards improving the service, as I'm an indie developer.

Re: Latest Central Subway Controversy: Commissioned Sculptor Once Shot a Dog

Cause: Shoot a rescue dog on film. It's a new RSS feed reader that is trying to change the way you feel about RSS. It does two things really, really well:

1) Shows you the original site instead of a context-less feed. Read the original and NewsBlur marks the stories you've read.
2) Filters stories you like and dislike. A three-stop slider goes between dislike, neutral, and like (red, yellow, and green). Training is super-easy and all click-based (as opposed to writing out what you like in a site, NewsBlur gives recommendations on what to rate).

Try it out at: http://www.newsblur.com. It imports from Google Reader through OAuth. (It also supports OPML importing.) Plus it's open-source: http://github.com/samuelcla....

Re: NewsBlur: The Intelligent Feed Reader

Amani, a hearty thanks for the write-up! The features that you requested are on the priority list. Unfortunately, I have about a half-dozen other tasks (fixing feed fetching for some feeds, the iPhone app, parallel feed fetching to make importing and refreshing *much* faster) first.

But rest assured, I too think those are important features worth building.

Sam

Re: Recent travel photo albums (post created with help from the Graph API) - Benjamin Golub

This is for readability.
