I went to 1up immediately after posting the previous comment, and guess which game is being advertised on the splash page!

Re: Ninjatown: The Lost Review & Giveaway

Aw. I miss Shawn's sweet writing skills. Glad to hear he's doing well. And props for the "Just another _____ game" reference. One of these days, I hope to write reviews for a legitimate gaming mag and proliferate this glorious meme.

Re: Sore Thumbs

Wow. Talk about misogyny! Seriously guys, why don't you hone your chops instead of whining about gender preferences?

There is a reason why female writers are being preferred for this particular site... and that's because it's marketed toward FEMALE READERS. Use some logic, knucklehead.

Also, in regards to the industry as a whole, more female gamers are needed, so a site such as this is integral to bringing more women into the fold.

Re: Sore Thumbs

Ooooh. My wife never changed her name, which is fine by me as she's lived with it her whole life, I have no reason to ask her to change it. Ramah Boyer does have a nice ring to it though!

Re: Sore Thumbs

Congrats, you magnificent bastard! I got married last year and I have absolutely no regrets. Best decision I ever made, that. And no, my wife isn't looking over my shoulder as I type this.

You crazy kids going on a honeymoon?

Oh! And gaming is allowed, but only while in transit. Or at least, that's what my wife said when she broke out the DS while I drove merrily.

Re: Sore Thumbs

Sucks to be that dude's feet, though.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 5)

I cannot believe there are still Sizzler's around! I haven't seen one since I was on tour in the midwest, and even though we (as a band) were starving and broke, we still couldn't force ourselves to eat there.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 5)

I can't remember where I saw it, but I remember seeing a documentary type program about Japan that mentioned a bar like this. I don't think the companies themselves are paying for a female consort, but the establishment itself offers this as a service to weary Japanese workaholics that like to drink. I don't believe the women "service" the customers, or anything like that. They are simply there to inflate the ego. The program *did* mention that this sort of place was extremely expensive, however.

In regards to "journalists" leaving media outlets to join the industry... well, I'm sure that has more to do with pay rate than anything. From my understanding, the 1up kids don't make the proverbial "phat loot." Factor that with the expenses of living in a city like San Francisco, and you're most definitely going to have talented people leaving for greener pastures. It happens. Or so I hear.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 5)

It's called "ETHICS," look into it.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 5)

As a consumer and enthusiast, I never once thought that companies did things like this to keep the press in their good favor. I mean, I assumed that they might pay for a plane ticket out to god knows wherever in order to help promote their product, but I never once imagined anything of the sort that gets exposed in this blog. I mean, sure... free plush dolls or other minuscule marketing is one thing, but a free trip to the World Series? Fuck off, man. That just comes off as absolutely ridiculous to someone who works crap jobs and spends hard earned money on relatively expensive games to escape the drudgery of his mundane existence.

Re: Sore Thumbs

I have never heard of Crispy Gamer until the previous post, but after reading this article I have to say I am a fan.

Re: Sore Thumbs

Game Informer... man. Those guys at GameStop are filthy snake oil salesmen, no doubt, but I cannot believe the manager at my local shop told me it was a well-written magazine.

Re: From the perspective of a game publisher

I have nothing to add to the already awesome comments posted here. I just wanted to say that I desire to be a part of that so-called "real" journalism for the gaming industry.

And as I have to deal with you little PR kids everyday at the university... might I say that you give them a good name, kind anonymous sir/madam. Most of them appear to be soulless fiends intent on making as much money as possible by spinning bullshit in to the best sparkling shine. Nice to see a few make it out okay!

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 4)

Please continue the dragging out of your blog posts. If it means we get more posts on a more frequent basis, by all means, stretch that shit like a Stretch Armstrong in the hands of ADHD addled little monster!

I'd like to think that the publishers are probably doing themselves a disservice by offering these sort of edutainment excursions. If I go to a real life UFC match, chances are I'm going to play the game and realize how little it compares to the real deal, and then possibly write about my disappointment. Same goes for jet-fighting school (which I might add did not exist in my brain until this particular blog entry, but now I'm thinking I definitely took the wrong path after high-school).

I agree with JD. These companies are putting their resources in to the wrong places. If they were to spend the same money they spent marketing the game to both media and consumer on creating a better product, chances are that game would be THREE BILLION TIMES BETTER.

But I suppose on the flipside of that particular coin, if the companies were to use some of that money to take better care of it's employees, then maybe the games would be better as well.

Re: First-person first-personing...

This is important! That sets my chances a bit higher! I'm also learning Japanese, as I figure that might come in handy. Thanks for your response! I love the internet. Growing up reading EGM, I never once thought I'd one day be communicating with the one and only Shoe.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 3)

Oh, and one last question, if you don't mind... How many writers in the field of videogame journalism are actually diploma carrying journalists? Cause seriously, I read Kotaku sometimes and just wonder to myself how the hell they get by with some of the crap they post. This is not in reference to the ridiculous amount of grammatical and spelling errors that plague the site, but ya know, I guess it sort of is at the same time.

Re: Behind the Scenes: Gaming Journalism (Part 3)

I have to say that as a student working on my Journalism degree, this blog is insanely fascinating. I can understand that in the early days as a trade publication, you sort of have to kiss the subject's ass. How else are you going to get the big scoops and therefore push more issues?

I've always appreciated your stance on not taking exclusives. I didn't read EGM for the exclusives. I read the mag because the writers were competent, creative, and honestly, I liked the attitude. It was a bit punk rock in a way.

My question is: does this happen in other trade publications? Is this sort of behavior anomalous to the video-game industry? Like, does Universal send hookers to the offices of Rolling Stone if they want a particular movie or album to sell?

I only ask, because I'd prefer to write about music or games, but if it requires sucking the cock of a capitalist product, I'll pass and switch majors.
