We’re packing up the pickup and heading out of Minneapolis into rural America to see what we can see. Steel pedal guitars, low population density, farming practices, blue highways, and the collected works of Merle Haggard will all feature prominently as a distinguished group of guests intimately familiar with the country tell stories, play songs, show images, or do all three at once. Interesting article. Seems to me like everybody needs to find their own balance between solitude and collaboration. I think great work can come out of either end of the spectrum, but one thing that really irks me is the idea that a "lone genius" creates in a vacuum. To me, collaboration is as much about honoring the work of others (whether it's your immediate collaborators or the author of an influential book your read) as it is about a particular kind of work environment.

Re: Detroit Urban Farm Tour

Very cool!

Re: http://fightwithknives.tumblr.com/post/8391860569

From your reply above it sounds like you think "not having time to read" is a just some bourgie 1st world problem. That's kinda classist, no? I wouldn't assume you actually think this, especially not in a public forum, but you can see how quickly something can be twisted online.

For instance, the idea that everything that happens at the Walker is automatically bourgeois. 5 years ago you might have had an argument, but Open Field has done a lot to open up the social capital within those walls, and to me (especially when talking about an Open Field project) that argument seems out of touch. Having benefited from Open Field yourself, I'm genuinely surprised to hear you still trumpeting that line.

Field Office Fellowship was dreamed up over beers with Sarah Schultz as a way to involve more local artists in Open Field. It's the three of us working on it as a labor of love: Shanai, myself, and Sarah. You might have met Sarah when you were doing your Twin Cities Runoff Storymaking event at the Walker in early July. I don't need to comment on the irony here.

I'm sure you're busy (and I make no class assumptions in saying that!), but you're welcome to come to the conversation next Friday and learn more about the project, it's intentions, Chris' background, etc. Your voice would be a welcome addition to the conversation, and I think we'd all learn quite a bit.

Re: http://fightwithknives.tumblr.com/post/8391860569

I'm sorry Deb, but I think you're off the mark here.

The public library is a place primarily about open access to information while Reading Room MPLS is an event primarily about the experience of intentional reading with others. It’s like apples to oranges, there’s no way to compare the two!

More importantly, Reading Room MPLS is a creative project, put together by an artist, Chris Fischbach, who is thinking very intentionally about the experience of reading, and who is posing very interesting questions in doing so. Kurt Vonnegut said that “Literature is the only art form in which the audience performs the score.” Reading Room MPLS provides a platform for a community of readers to test the claim that reading is a creative act in and of itself. Saying “You can do that at the library!” dismisses the role of the artist in this project and discounts yourself from a really juicy conversation going on in the Twin Cities right now: What happens when you draw a frame around the act of reading?

The bookmarks made for Reading Room MPLS suggest that others take the project on the road… so what about Reading Room at the local library? A quite room away from distraction that asks your to consider the act of reading with artful intention. I think that’d be fantastic!

[Full disclosure: Shanai and I helped to develop the framework for Field Office Fellowship, of which Reading Room MPLS is a part, and are currently facilitating it and the 7 other FOF projects. I'm kinda creeped out by Khan's vision of his lessons becoming standard the world over while teachers are reduced to "coaches." It does have a nice market appeal to it, though. How soon before the first Khan Academy charter school? Think of the savings with just one (virtual) teacher on faculty! Your concerns are spot on, and also shared by just about everybody I've talked to. I'm hoping that as more people use the system they'll continue to provide feedback to Nice Ride (like you did) and that improvements will be made. And they've GOT to get some stations in North. It's shameful that there aren't any.

In any case, Shanai and I are looking forward to a spin this weekend. We actually plan to tour the whole system so there will be a lot of docking and re-swiping, thanks for the tip on how it works!

Re: http://fightwithknives.tumblr.com/post/701456699

Hahahaha.

That's awesome.

I mean, nobody ever ice me. And yes, the double meaning there is nice, when your medium is something visceral like like video games, but it certainly doesn't apply everywhere.

While we're picking it apart, I think there is actually a big benefit to LTMR that the authors missed out on mentioning. When you jump from 1 (idea) to 3 (rock), all kinds of good things happen, and they do a good job of talking about that, but more importantly - you're gonna make mistakes. And that's a good thing. It's how we learn. I think we can learn so much more if we idea, rock, talk.

Look at a company like IDEO, they've intentionally built learning from making and failing into their creative process. Of course, you don't call it making and failing, it's called prototyping!

Re: http://weworkhere.tumblr.com/post/474847531

I agree!
