As a parent, I could not care less about the *average* student performance. I care about *my kid's* performance.

If you're evaluating teachers, the progress for children is a key metric. That's the difference between the first day and last day of school. For any given set of students, the gains could be high or low. Over time, it could become clear which teachers have the more substantial impact, but how that data is used could pose real problems. I suspect teachers (probably rightly) worry that the data might be used incorrectly.

Still, at least gathering that data could be useful for teachers who want to see where they aren't getting through or who want to take their individualized "scorecard" to a higher-paying job.

But if the question is "Would it be better" to put 60% of holdings in bonds, probably, but the biggest reason I think it would be better is that it would force pension funds to admit that they simply cannot generate returns of 7 or 8 percent on those portfolios year after year.

Good piece. In talking to various Uber drivers, they've told me that their user rating is the most precious asset they have. For many drivers, being suspended by Uber is as easy as choosing to work on a Friday night when many drunk people might be less clear about the quality of the interaction they're having with the driver. That said, if that's the biggest problem drivers face, it's easy enough to just let the cabs pick those kids up.

Interesting, but is this necessarily a problem? I can see that it's a waste of paper and possibly also of readers' time, but does an increased retraction rate possibly just a reflection of a kind of "crowdsourcing" of published papers?
