I care about *my kid's* performance.

If you're evaluating teachers, the progress for children is a key metric. That's the difference between the first day and last day of school. For any given set of students, the gains could be high or low. Over time, it could become clear which teachers have the more substantial impact, but how that data is used could pose real problems. I suspect teachers (probably rightly) worry that the data might be used incorrectly.

Still, at least gathering that data could be useful for teachers who want to see where they aren't getting through or who want to take their individualized "scorecard" to a higher-paying job.

Re: Public Pensions: Risk Finds A Way

But if the question is "Would it be better" to put 60% of holdings in bonds, probably, but the biggest reason I think it would be better is that it would force pension funds to admit that they simply cannot generate returns of 7 or 8 percent on those portfolios year after year.

Re: Public Pensions: Risk Finds A Way

I don't think pension funds should be investing in individual stocks or private equity at all.

Re: What Hollywood is Really Worried About with the Kevin Spacey Allegations

I like Martin, but this could be one of the worst things he's ever written.

Re: Who won the presidential debate?

I wish Gary had been given more time to speak, but given what the other two candidates said, he easily won.

Re: Marijuana vs. Scotch and a Low IQ

Mr. Tyrrell is confused.

Re: Real Debt Help - Get out of debt with Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover Plan - daveramsey.com

Zero - Start with a zero-based budget every month.

Re: Jacob Grier: No [Expletive deleted] Way!

Jacob Grier is one of history's lesser monsters.

Re: Ridesharing, insurance and regulation

Good piece. In talking to various Uber drivers, they've told me that their user rating is the most precious asset they have. For many drivers, being suspended by Uber is as easy as choosing to work on a Friday night when many drunk people might be less clear about the quality of the interaction they're having with the driver. That said, if that's the biggest problem drivers face, it's easy enough to just let the cabs pick those kids up.

Re: 10 Questions Every Liberal Should Ask Every Republican

May I suggest you choose smarter Republicans to question?

Re: By All Means, Destroy Coal Mining Jobs

Thanks.

Re: By All Means, Destroy Coal Mining Jobs

This is a test comment. I can see that it's a waste of paper and possibly also of readers' time, but does an increased retraction rate possibly just a reflection of a kind of "crowdsourcing" of published papers?

Re: Patricia Neal, RIP

Yes.

Re: Advice to Tea Partiers

I'm not sure tea partiers are quite as universally opposed to immigrants and supportive of protracted war as you might believe.

Re: A Few Good Nugs

If I can convince myself that the vest is more like a utility belt, maybe I can justify buying it anyway.

Re: Happy Birthday Earl Scruggs!

Test comment.

Re: Jerry Brito - The funny thing is most of my readers aren’t on...

Is that a thing?
