I agree. So what I did was: I bought a pebble. The battery life lasts a week and it can do everything you described above (except "apple pay" obviously). At $150 you can afford to get one now and wait out the market and see what directions things take. At least, this has been my strategy. So far so good. The only drawback is the screen is e-ink (i.e. black and white), but that doesn't bother me. Just my $0.02

When there was a guy in my house (no, really)... I appreciated the quick police response. Of course I was in the middle of the street with my now husband, and it was easy to verify that we lived there. After they secured the house they did ask my husband if he had a weapon (he was standing in the middle of the street holding a machete for a bit), after talking to him they realized they had bigger fish to fry and went back to getting the dude out of my house. I think my point is you really don't know how you feel until you are in this type of situation. (for the record, I was not "swatted" or anything like that but my next door neighbor somehow wandered into my house while we weren't home. It's the home invasion aspect I am relating to). But if it is a serious life or death situation, I just don't see what they can really "vet".

This! However, I have met ones that have no power over me (or anyone else for that matter) so I would just leave it as "until you meet one." But lots of people don't get that these kinds of people do in fact exist.

I'm in Vegas and... I make a bit more than $45k-$50k. I'm pretty close to the range that you speak of. And I know people here who *do* make in the $90-100k range doing similar jobs to me (software engineer). Maybe it's not as high as somewhere in California, but it's not what you're making it out to be. And my mortgage (not rent) is close to a grand. Last time I put out my resume I got a call back within a couple days. So I'm pretty sure I could do more than just freelance.
I don't need to ask how you know, because I'm living the scenario you're talking about.

All that being said, I too laugh when hearing about the "booming tech industry", I always laugh when hearing those things. Booming tech industry it is not. For sure it could be better. But it could also be worse. No doubt that CA or Washington state would probably be better for tech.

It's really not. If someone's brain is not functioning properly, attempting to discover ones SELF isn't going to do jack. So what advice would you have had for my mother, who, many years ago during a schizophrenic episode, thought her boss was stalking her and changed the locks on the house seven times in one night....? I'll keep your sage advice in mind next time my mom goes off the deep end. Although now she is properly medicated so for the most part she is OK. She has not had a "major" episode in years. I'm just trying to imagine myself as a teenager trying to calmly tell my mother to discover her self while she was changing locks on the doors all night. Yeah frikkin right. This is part of the reason why we have such a problem with mental illness. People really don't get it unless it affects them directly.

That is no basis to declare this a cover story. It's also untrue. Once you have schizophrenia, you can still have episodes throughout the rest of your life. So who knows when her illness first "showed up". Don't think people past the age of 28 have any symptoms or episodes? Just ask my 67 year old mother.

I wish you had seen something different too. It's the people that have your experiences and end up with the views that you do that hold society back. I don't hate you, but as a hard working woman with a professional job (coincidentally making more than my husband - but that's not the point, he makes enough to be self sufficient if he needed to be) , it makes me sad that people out there view the world this way.

Not at all true. The original buzzfeed article mentioned "you always got Halloween off from school because of Nevada day." That was my experience 100%. I remember going to Disneyland on that day because it was not at all crowded since all the California kids were still in school. How long have you lived in Vegas to not know when Nevada day is?
