First, just sign up for a SKYPASS account on their website, it's free. Next find the flight you want to take on the partner airline, I used Delta for mine. Then call Korean and say "here's the flight I'd like to take, can you tell me what amount of miles I'll need?" They'll call you back in a day or so and tell you if it's available for a reward with them or not. You DO NOT need to have the miles in your account when you make this call. In fact, when they call you back, if they have the specific flight, they'll hold it for you up until the day before to pay them in miles.

Search Delta to see what flights you'd like to use. Next, sign up for a Korean SKYPASS membership. Then call Korean Air SKYPASS team and request they check the availability for a reward flight on that particular itinerary. They'll take the information, and call you back in about 24 hours. On the flight I booked, they didn't have the return date that I wanted, but did have it two days later, so I opted to stay longer. They'll then place a hold on the reservation for you, so that you can get your application together, which is a little bit time consuming but not difficult.

The first thing you'll need to do is fill out an award far application. You can upload it as a PDF and email it to them at engskypass@koreanair.com. If you're only booking for yourself, this is all you'll need to do.

If you're adding a second fare for a family member (I added my wife) you'll also need to fill out a SKYPASS Family Registration application. Along with the application, you have to prove your relationship, so I sent along a picture of my marriage certificate to the same email address. They also need copies of ID for anyone flying.

And then that's really it. After they receive everything, they call you back within another 24 hours (it was a lot shorter for me), and confirm you. The best part is, if you don't have the miles in your account, they will wait to charge you the miles and taxes up until the day before your flight! This seemed a little too risky for me, so I processed it.

I recently used 50K points for two round trips from JFK - HNL through Korean. While it's a weird system, including having to produce a copy of my marriage license to get my wife included, the customer service is superb and really not difficult. Further, they technically hold the flight for you, and don't require you redeem your miles with them until the day before the scheduled departure! So technically, you could reserve your flight, and then spend months waiting to compile the requisite miles. I had the miles, and this sounded like a risk I wasn't willing to take, so I didn't do it. But all in all, it's a great deal.

Now to get 100K more so I can get some nights at the Grand Hyatt on Kauai.

I have the credit card, and I tend to stay at Starwood hotels when I go somewhere. But I use the points for airlines. So I will be quick to unload them, I think. Thanks

The United code share is an awesome move. The flights are essentially the same cost as an EWR flight, and exactly the same from a United rewards standpoint.

American is currently giving a 20% bonus on SPG transferred points. If you transfer 20,000 or more points, SPG gives you a 5000 mile bonus when transferring to airline miles. The SPG miles transfer to airlines at a 1:1 ratio, so if you move 20,000 SPG points to American before August 7, you'll get 30,000 AAdvantage miles. This is certainly worth it, in my opinion.

When I was a kid, we'd go to Vogt, American Legion and Max Myers. Once, as a middle schooler, I had my first initial (A) shaved into the back of my head, as having your name back there was stylish and my stylist could only manage an initial. At Max Myers later that day, an older boy saw my new do and asked, "what's that stand for, a--hole?" I shaved it off that night.

If you're thinking of going to Hawaii on AAdvantage miles, I'd highly recommend you look now, to see if you can get an Hawaiian Airlines flight. They are being removed from the program in September, I believe, but they are a wonderful carrier and a great value with miles. My wife and I are going direct JFK - HNL coach, and then first class with a layover HNL-PHL in February for 100,000 total miles after our citi rebates.

I would certainly confirm that with Barclays and AA before making the purchase. I bought miles from the US Air site with the now defunct US Air Barclaycard, and they only paid 1:1

You would get the 50% bonus, but they won't give you double miles for the direct purchase. I bought miles from US Air about six months ago to top off for a rewards flight and they were 1 mile/$1

I listen to KPOA Maui, at kpoa.com, Hawaiian Music, Maui Style! The music is perfectly background, and the radio DJs are native Hawaiians and delightful. I find it to take me away from a bleak New Jersey winter, and be light enough that I can actually get some work done.
