I was googling something about Fiery Furnaces and stumbled upon this thoughtful post. Which almost word for word articulates my feelings about the band. Are they canon? Maybe, maybe not. But their best work is indelible. These days I am much more likely to go for Eleanor solo, so this has been a good reminder of why I need to go back and revisit their work, and the songs I still love.

Re: DAY 6: 21-Day New Year's Yoga Challenge: Refresh, Refuel, Revive

Bookmarking Ali's balanced, enjoyable flow! Just saw this. Your points are well taken. In hindsight it's obvious that the "translators" portion of Ozzie's remarks could foment tensions between Asian and Latino players. I was just inclined to agree with the idea that more support should be offered to all players arriving from outside of the US, rather than just informal support from other players from the same background. I'm aware of plenty of stories of young Latin American players getting effectively chewed up and spit out by the baseball system, although I'm definitely not qualified to speak on that topic. Of course there are structural issues here too - I know that there are going to be legitimate differences in what individual players receive when they enter the league, regardless of background, because of their experience and skill level.

Primarily, though, I was intending to indicate support for Ozzie's other, related, remarks about the susceptibility of young, poor Latino players to manipulation and exploitation from agents, including potential pressures with respect to performance enhancing drugs. (Although, duh, Ozzie's claim that he is the "only one" concerned about the issue is right up there with Al Gore's mythical statement that he "invented the internet.") Obviously this portion of Ozzie's remarks and the other portion are indistinguishable in the linked article and I should have clarified.

Thanks for calling me out!

Re: Open Note to Annabel Lwin

And just the general power imbalance which Lwin herself describes: "I was a young girl, and he was an authority figure for me. He was an intellectual to me. He used to know about fine wines and stuff like that. And he used to always talk with this really posh accent, which I couldn’t quite get over." Way too creepy/Svengali for me.

Re: Open Note to Annabel Lwin

Regardless of whether Lwin got her horizons expanded, etc. etc. the fact remains that he encouraged her to pose BUCK NAKED for album covers WHEN SHE WAS FOURTEEN YEARS OLD.

I concede I've never much liked the Sex Pistols (except for a brief period in my tweens when I tried to like them out of a misplaced sense of obligation) so I probably tend to lowball MML's importance, even though I objectively know that without Sex Pistols we would apparently not have 10000000 other bands.
Even despite my admission in #1, I often felt he gave himself way too much credit for "birthing punk rock" in an "I invented the internet" sort of way - he invented some, he merely promoted the work of others a LOT (and through occasionally questionable means). So, while I am sorry to hear about his loss, I've never viewed him with the utmost reverence.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand: the man was responsible for creating/promoting some groundbreaking shit, but w/r/t/ Bow Wow Wow I get skeeved out. But obviously it doesn't matter what I think - if Lwin is ok with it, then more power to her.

Re: http://americaneyes.tumblr.com/post/506578585

+1,000,000, friend!

Re: http://bluefly.tumblr.com/post/501892780

It's not my cup of blackcurrant juice, but nice curveball with the Ribena!

Re: Hoosier Addict

It's not you - there are discrepancies between what is listed on their "Order" tab and what is listed on the "Menu" tab. Anecdotally, to the extent that there are still "new hires" at larger firms in Chicago who didn't get their offers revoked they being asked to defer their start date without pay, more than a year in some cases. Or they are part of a small fraction hired on without too much to do...Far better to go work for a mid-size firm if you can do it. You'll still make six figures and you'll actually get experience.

Re: http://perpetua.tumblr.com/post/405316005

Dhs, are you serious? Misogyny = contempt for women. The caption calls LA a "tart" and refers to her breats as "flapjacks". Additionally - and this is just my interpretation - while the caption appears to be giving LA a backhanded compliment for keeping said "flapjacks" covered, I get the feeling that the captionist is pissed off that she DIDN'T flash the paps, i.e. why didn't that fucking tart put out? Either way, highly offensive and disappointing.

Re: http://americaneyes.tumblr.com/post/392909970

Yeah, that's definitely a significant factor. Lately my issue seems to be either not having food, or more accurately not having food EARLY ENOUGH in the process. I very rarely have the intent of crazy partying these days and will be fine...until I go from zero to bad news in the space of a minute. Conversely, on my birthday (when I stuffed my face), I drank low-rent dark and stormys and a shot of Jameson and didn't even get tipsy. (I did, however, feel bloated and gross.) And even when I don't get tipsy, even when I just have literally a beer or two, I increasingly feel icky the next day anyway. (Hi, 30th birthday!)

Physical extremes aside, I think it's also just good in a larger sense to remind/prove to myself that I have the self-control to abstain.

Not sure if I am going cold turkey for a period of time or just starting off cold turkey and reducing the quantity/frequency for a period of time, but do I think I will stick with it, whatever "it" I land on. Honestly, I've thought about doing this for a while but been reluctant to do so. (Scared? Unpack that.) However, increasingly when I am offered a beverage it's not even that desirable, much like how I felt when I gave up social smoking. (Except the dessert wine I convinced Scott to order at dinner on Monday, which tasted like liquified raspberry preserves, which YUM.) I was under no outside pressure to stop, I had no grand plan to stop, I just suddenly had an aversion. (I should note that my most recent and notable legal-event-induced, insane hangover was quite recently so that could be the contributing factor. Oof.)

This has also improved my sex life, partially but not solely due to the fact that I am already less likely to doze off in front of the TV at night. Like I said, productivity!

Re: http://bluefly.tumblr.com/post/380316600

We're getting it right now! It was nice to run/walk down the street without worrying about ice. Well, I don't really watch Law and Order (original flavor) much these days. I know that one's full of inaccuracies, but since I can't remember shit about evidentiary rules, it doesn't really bother me. In any event, my time and interest extends mostly to L&O: CI, which almost exclusively focuses on policework and the "whodunit" aspect rather than the law. And yes, I love me some D'Onofrio. Usually the "personal" subplots on these things suck, but the dysfunctioal relationship between Goren and his ailing mother was really, really well written. (Except for a really retarded "surprise" involving the identity of his father.) Plus, in those early eps, he was HAWT! In a troubled, cerebral kind of way.

Happy holidays!

Re: American Eyes

I know...I read this and was, like, "I hate my generation!...No, wait, I hate the generation after mine!"

I also know that this isn't about young people, nightlife, or even hipsters generally, but sort of the worst extremes of each.
