I'm not so sure Brubaker wasn't trying to draw a connection. And if he wasn't, arguably, he should have been. The way I read the story, the point was that there was a short line between tea-bag style populist anger and Michigan Militia style violence (e.g. the Watchdogs). It's not dissimilar from the border/immigration story Marvel told in Punisher War Journal a couple of years back, which drew a very clear line between the militia movement and hate groups. The difference this time around? They got called on it and caved. Spineless.

First off, I do believe that some degree of rationing services is inevitable both in a reform plan, but also in our current system, e.g. this is a problem we already have.

That said, this is a challenging article that -- to me -- brings up a whole mess of concerns re: the cold precision of technocracy versus the butterflies and kittens perspective on healthcare equity that I personally hold.

In my mind, quantitative analysis and quality of life considerations are a pretty uneasy marriage -- especially if consensus on the value of human life (or more precisely on certain types of human life) is derived from commonly held perceptions of the value of types of life.

I don't think this argument is simply limited to the hypothetical of the value of the life of a person with a disability versus that of someone who has no disability either. Taken to its extreme, one could easily apply factors like employability, education, etc. could be seen as objective measures of the worth for for an individual life, with structural societal factors implicitly and inevitably informing who would and who wouldn't be ghetto-ized by the seemingly objective math of such determinations.

All of which is to say that I need to re-read the article and think a bit more about what humane rationing might look like. Do you have thoughts on the subject?
