It really isn’t meant to be a negative when saying “nothing you learned is relevant”, just, there’s no good way to really teach it otherwise."

I agree that there's no way an IST degree can teach you EVERYTHING you might experience in the real world as so many applications of the degree exist; however, I would not go so far to say the material in the classroom learned is irrelevant. An IST degree PREPARES you for the real world by introducing you to a variety of skills...soft skills learned from working in teams, presentations, and business writing; and technical skills learned from coding classes and the various projects worked on. The soft skills are imperative to success no matter where you go. You definitely learn how important they are while enrolled in IST classes and thus, you work on them. As for technical skills, in most cases, IST classes aren't going to make you an expert programmer or network administrator before you graduate. Rather, they create a foundation for you to build upon and they introduced you to what you might need out in the real world. It's then your decision to become specialized in an area of interest or an area that aligns with your desired career path.

Re: Penn State, MIT, Stanford, CMU: Which one in this group doesn’t belong?

David,

Who's going to bring the VCs here?

You said above that in order for real change to occur, it can't be just the students setting the example, but the administration must initiate the creation of a top-notch support system for entrepreneurship. My point is that it boils down to money to get this going if the top VCs don't naturally come.

Re: China Shuts Down Entertainment Websites for Three Days of Mourning

According to one source, the death toll may reach 50,000 people. I agree that for real change to occur, it has to come from the top; however, just because the administration wants to devote more resources to aid aspiring entrepreneurs doesn't mean they have funding to do it. In order to bring more venture capitalists to State College and get the word out about the great students here, the administration needs to staff and pay people dedicated to just that. The state of Pennsylvania gives the LEAST amount of funding to Penn State and that funding is DISTRIBUTED to the MANY programs at our university. One of the best things about our university is the variety of programs available. Other schools have a more defined focus. Comparing Penn State to Ivy leagues and MIT is like comparing apples to oranges. We are not the same type of school.

Nevertheless, turning Penn State into a private institution is on the horizon. And if this occurs, having the resources at our university to support the entrepreneurship drive would be more likely.

Re: Penn State, MIT, Stanford, CMU: Which one in this group doesn’t belong?

David, the overall point of your post that we shouldn't settle for complacency is right on. However, realistically, Penn State's never going to mirror Ivy leagues schools and MIT in students and resources available to them. Additionally, starting out with a job at a company after graduation may be the best choice for students with loans to pay off. Many may not feel ready to risk their own money and time on an entrepreneurship idea. A full-time job or summer internship at a top company gives students real-life business experience, may increase their technical skills, and also provides compensation, which is in many cases, necessary. Working at a company can also give you contacts or future clients. I don't think it's ever too late in life to begin your own company, so starting AT a company and gaining financial security may be the preferred option for many.

The best way we can help change things at Penn State while we're here is exactly what SCold Guy said, BE the culture or BE the change. Students like yourself, David, will set the example, let others know its within their reach, and increase the competition. Your post is certainly inspiring in that way.

Re: Penn State Dominates IdeaBlob: The Fog Clears and Matt Allison is on Top

I like the mailing list idea.
