I got a new one that was made as a replica...broke after two years...not anywhere near as good as the originals! BTW, I had one in Vietnam, too. Then I got a fancy Seiko at the PX. They were much "cooler."

Re: Diagnosing the Republican Brain

Thanks John Fitzgerald. Very well done. I think part of what's happening is the playground phenomenon. Some kids are mercilessly teased for being "slower" than other kids, or being different, or not getting good grades. With Sarah Palin and her friends, these picked-on kids as adults are now able to return the favor to the intellectual bullies. And so in a sense, we're reaping what we sow. Others, like Glenn Beck know how to build and keep an audience. The libertarian talk-show host Gene Burns nailed Beck and Limbaugh many years ago. "I do talk radio. They do entertainment."

Re: Afghanistan War: Is the US giving up the northeast?

These are the kind of discussions we had in Vietnam! Again, our leaders have no discernible strategy...or they are not inculcating the troops with it! Two officers, on camera, along with enlisted men, are debating whether we should be there, with troops outside in the line of fire? Same old, same old! We haven't learned a thing, have we? What's worse, I know Spec. Wilder and his mother. And I see him in the middle of a policy debate, putting his life on the line! Either we are the world's police force or we're not! If we are, we have to use vastly different tactics. These are the same tactics we used in Vietnam, and look how that ended. If we are not going to be the police, then we have to get out now. But nobody over here is talking about it seriously. We have professional politicians in Washington debating whether we're going to change rules for how to bring items to vote in the House! Not how we're going to settle the situation in Afghanistan, or Iraq, or Israel, or Indonesia. Let's bring back universal military service and see how quickly these wars get settled. Bonnie, you sent me this clip and now I'm wound up! Sorry to rant. God bless your son and keep him safe.

Re: Paranoid Right Wingers Think Obama Wants to Give America Back to Native Americans | AlterNet

I actually don't think it's paranoia. I think it is a deliberate propaganda ploy by some very devious people. We've got a nasty underground/behind-the-scenes effort to discredit the President and the Democratic party. People are still asking for his proof of citizenship from Hawaii. And I'm not a conspiracy-theorist type of guy!

Re: Barbour Mistakes Black for White - Cynic - Politics - The Atlantic

What is really shocking is finding that Andrew Ferguson wrote this in the Weekly Standard! The machine is cranking up!

Re: 4 Steps for Managing Social Media Attention

Years ago...oh, about 30...I followed a strict regimen of handwriting my goals for the day and prioritizing them. I used a Daytimer book and it worked so well that I guess it became second nature, because I stopped doing it...just about the time I started working with ACT! For some reason, I haven't used the same numbering system in ACT! and that has gotten me into a lot of heartache lately with all the SM portals. Just this week, I was thinking I ought to go back to my prioritizing and spend X number of minutes on each task. And then along comes this article. Thanks for the post! (And EKB, no, I'm not paid to promote ACT!) But I have 4 programs open and 14 tabs open in Flock, so I definitely have pushed out too far. Again, thanks.

Re: At Ease with the Pledge

I don't know about the 30 hour work week, but I do remember a Franco-Italian lady in Portsmouth chiding me for being an "out of towner" back in 1976. Since her families got here in the early 1900's, I guess it's just a function of time? I grew up in an unincorporated village that used county services. It worked then and it works now in the rest of the country.

Re: At Ease with the Pledge

Until we all start seriously talking about "regionalization" (or whatever you want to call it) of services, we may as well drop the tax discussion all together. You can't support a fire chief, a police chief, a school superintendent, and all the other municipal services in NH's 13 cities and 221 towns without expecting high property taxes with no sales or income tax. So why don't we get serious about eliminating this massive duplication of services? We can do it "the New Hampshire way" or "the New England way" or we can lower our tax bill. Our choice.

Re: Happy Holidays! - Barack Obama | News from Presidential Candidates, the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the White House

As our good friend Jenny Stimac, from the Jenny-Wren Gallery in Rochester, NH, always says: "Look to the stars!" She means not only the celestial bodies and the potential that's beyond, but also the stars of our neighborhoods and towns. In other words, let's concentrate on those who are giving and not taking, who are contributing positively, not trying to tear down. That's what we can give each other. Messages and deeds of hope and love and good will for this New Year.
