Thank you for putting this utility together - it worked like a charm! Enhancement request: when you ask for the sudo password, please ask for the username too. I am often logged into a different user for security reasons and it would be great if the dialog box had two fields and also asked for a username with admin rights.

thank you so much!!!! this was driving me nuts on ElementaryOS 7.1 (based on 22.04.3)

I actually checked the /etc/default/grub file - it would have been very useful to have seen a comment such as:

# Uncomment to enable pre-22.04 behavior to detect other bootable partitions (eg. Windows) #GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false

what code base can we make this change and ask for a pull request? I’ve contributed to other projects but I’m really new to how developers work together on Linux!

this is driving me nuts. I was hoping your last incantation of mount would work for specific uid/gid but it didn’t. (I’ve tried quite a few from AskUbuntu)

I’m on Ubuntu 22.04.3. It mounts just as it did before (mask 0755), but it’s only writable by root:root when I’d like it to be owned by a specific user so they can do the bulk of the writes.

this article is a bit of a hit or miss. I've been experimenting leaving my phone on Focus mode and only allowing the phone to ring (no push notifications) for about 8 months now. it's not that I don't like to talk on the phone - I just feel burnt out talking on the phone with ppl where it either seems we're never going to meet face-to-face or it is long distance so it takes more planning & effort to meet (opposed to "how bout we meet for lunch in 15 min at the new restaurant around the corner?") I'm also a social dancer so connections on the phone not only are lacking social cues, they are lacking physical connection. it seems like Ive had to come to terms with accepting whoever I meet on the dance floor & it requires me to have zero expectations that a heartfelt connection on the floor will evolve into something more off the dance floor. it's quite the zen experience I suppose!

Thank you for pursuing this research at a time I feel quite isolated & down. I am a community organizer for several forms of dance where close embrace is the norm so the lines between intimate, friendly & professional touch are blurred (eg. http://BAmF.dance/video). I did not anticipate the impact of retreating from SF to SD & the anxiety I experience navigating the spectrum of risk others are willing to take on both when it comes to moving online connections offline and new people I meet (esp dance circles). Understanding the increased complexity and impact of navigating this space "in between" en route to touch feels like another aspect of follow up research.

Are you sure is the same exact problem w 32-bit app support in iOS11 and iOS14.5?

ok - I’m not pissed off at Apple nor am I attached to apps that are no longer updated. What I do have an issue with is it would have been nice, prior to the update, to have been advised “These apps will no longer work after this update to iOS 14.5. Please export your data from these apps before updating as you will not be able to do this once you’ve applied the update.”

I have a friend who had a password manager that stopped working, accidentally hit the “Delete” button (instead of “Keep”) - thank god she had already transitioned to another app (that is supported) and moved over the most critical passwords because clearly all the data was as good as gone. This could have been a complete disaster for her! Not cool.

ah - just moved and stumbled on my old SD400 and 2GB Eye-Fi Share - hadn’t been touched since 2015.

I was concerned the card wouldn’t even work as a dumb SD and whew - it still works.

I agree, it is a bummer they didn’t roll out a firmware update for some kind of local WiFi function.

This is exactly the concern I have about IoT - we evaluated a few smart plugs earlier this year and after navigating the nightmare of cloud portals online, we concluded open source (pre-flashed Tasmota and Home Assistant) will be the way to go.

These companies just don’t learn when it comes to making the cloud just a value-added feature and being optional!

while this technically gets rid of all my iMessage history, it corrupts the app. even after reboot, when you launch iMessage, it says “Messages is updating...” with [Quit Messages] as the only way to close this dialog box.

How do we empty out the chat db without deleting it?

EDIT: i copied over the default chat.db* files from a new user, rebooted, and this worked like a charm. Messages.app doesn’t appear to know what to do if you nuke the whole directory like other apps!

bummer Eye Contact isn’t coming to iPadOS. Given most iPadPro users use their devices in landscape mode, it’s really annoying for the camera to be on the lefthand side! I hope this changes in the GA and apps like Zoom can somehow access an API to the new feature!

whoa 25% acceptance rate? can someone clarify if one can get deactivated for too many missed requests? I now get what feels like "threatening" emails from Lyft with phases like: "We've reached out to you several times about your substantial number of missed ride requests." - feels like someone slapping your wrist & saying "don't do it again!"

no prob Paula! just pls be sure to state there's no free lunch. I signed for GetUpside as suggested and after my first fill-up, abandoned the game realizing I had to keep up w referrals to get a high enough discount to be a viable alternative to cash priced gas stations & wrote off what I earned because you have to earn a total of $15 to waive fees [or recruit & maintain an active user]. so point being, there's the cost of organizing your purchasing habits around the GetUpside world which differs greatly from using an app like GasBuddy which just shows the lowest cost gas near you. (they have a cash back program, too, if I remember correctly so this might be another to add to yr next edition!)

you have a point that Costco is not for everyone and to be fair, neither are some of the options you mention for differing reasons. Thus I think the next revision of your article should include Costco for completeness.

What I've discovered over the past year is with the Costco Visa, 4% is more than sufficient to cover the 0.10 differential of the low cost cash-based prices while still retaining the convenience of a credit card.

Even in Millbrae, CA, ARCO (which usually is cash/debit only) accepts credit cards and using a Costco Visa at 4% off their credit price is a no-brainer!

I agree with @Jim, the average higher price of major stations that participate in these other offerings don't make it worth their while.

Lol -I forgot about the holdout. I just happened to get a new iPhone w Apple Pay this past wkd & went to self-checkout at a Target in SF & all systems go... it went really smoothly and a total breath of fresh air after a very mediocre experience of Android Pay last 22 months! Glad to be back 😉

how is Asana not on this list? relating to one's life like an "enterprise" is a god send - you dont really have to worry about scalability & whether this app is gonna be around - it just keeps handling the exponential speed our lives seem to expand at! Its also a big plus to be able to switch accounts & coordinate w different teams (both personal & business!) - the collaborative features rock!

i think the last part is subtle in that Akikazu seeks to torture the teacher until she digs up Kanako only to discover how crazy he really is to stop at nothing to dig her up himself so he can "kill" her himself. Thanks for the linear write-up - its much easier to watch these complex movies knowing we can turn to yr awesome blog as a safety net :)

if Google is so concerned about the bottom line, why don't they just charge for SMS notifications for those who really want them without forcing them to go to a paid Google App edition? Some people are not ready to handle the duplicity of gmail & Google Apps for 1 feature. I'm sure they'll make a nice profit.
