It's this indifference, clothed in "Progressive" ideals, that has caused...yes, *caused* the housing crisis, the homeless crisis, the mental health crisis, and allowed Seattle to become ground zero for the new face of hate, with multiple white supremacist/ white Nationalist/ Islamaphobic groups growing (Daily Stormer, Counter-Currents Publishing, American Vanguard, Northwestern Hammerskins, Firm 22, Crew 38, American Front, Pacific Coast Knights of the Klu Klux Klan, Northwest Front, Wolves of Vinland, ACT for America & more http://bit.ly/2CzfGmP ) and Washington State being described as "the last white Mecca" by arriving climate refugees from the southern states. Instead of facing the truth that Seattle's desire for money has left it morally bankrupt, voting in stadium upgrades and voting out homeless shelter support, Seattlites routinely disassociate from the reality that their personally profitable corporate serfdom *is actually killing people*.
Nikitta Oliver, you keep ranting and railing against the status-quo in this city. It gives me hope, and motivates me to join the chorus.

Re: New study: Seattle is one of the country’s most civically engaged cities, divided by race and socioeconomic status

You must be a Liberal.

Joseph P. East Palo Alto, Hayward, Richmond, Vallejo come to mind. The thing to remember is that they are just sterotypes, and are only kept alive through social prejudice, and lack of action. When I think of SF, it's likely based on my own experiences, not other peoples descriptions of a San Francisco sterotype, although that was not always true. I had nothing else to go on until I inhabited those streets, and met those people myself. My initial idea of stereotypical Oakland had more to do with community gardens, political action (think Black Panthers) and medical marijuana. I guess the things we see are occasionally reflections of what we expect to see.
To some, this crime may look like violent knuckleheads doing what people in Oakland do. To others, it may look like several generations of people living in poverty tearing each other apart through the frustrations that their short lives will also be looked down upon, prejudged, and their struggle disrespected.

Re: Shooting On 580 In Oakland Shuts Down Two Eastbound Lanes

It's possible that many people could put their words to better use by actually trying to see and change the issues that have caused almost an entire group of people right next to us to be denied social, educational, and economical opportunities because of their lack of privilege, instead of making flippant comments about an issue that is destroying the lives of our neighbors and most at risk communities.

Re: Shooting On 580 In Oakland Shuts Down Two Eastbound Lanes

Because no other part of the Bay Area has crime or shootings. I'd sneak my brothers hero comics, but Little Lotta was the only one that my mom sanctioned. No one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition! Honestly, I'm amazed at who I "reallY" am because of my ability to use humanity as a sound board for my personal development, as well as taking part in the development of us as a species. If this is not at all surprising that everyone on the internet is doing this to some degree or another, it should be. My abilities are magnified by all of your ideas. I'm surprised that witnessing the quickening evolution of our species before our very eyes is being missed by some who have chosen to see only their own tree, and dismiss the grand forest vistas before us.

Re: It was the early 21st century… No longer could man travel to the moon …or provide continuous reliable Internet service. Looking on social networking sites to avoid looking on social networking sites sounds so much like masturbating to learn why you may want to cut back on masturbating. Yeah, not gonna happen. Listening to music, good point, unless the person wanting to hear a catchy tune goes to Last.fm or Blip.fm to do it. It's the possibility that someone may understand our own viewpoint that makes social media so delicious. If I *really* need to get work done, and do not expressly need the internet to accomplish it, I disconnect, or, if I need the internet to finish my work, I use an OS/machine/browser I hate, to lessen the chance I'll fall off task. Generally all of these issues are solved by actually enjoying the work that I do, so I never really see it as doing work. If you like what you do for a living you never "have to" go to work anyway.
It's a nice attempt to provide some ideas on how to get away from social media time leeches, and although I don't agree with your final theory, it is a great jumping off point for other to describe what works for them. Thanks for starting the conversation.

Re: Mercy: Ephemera

w007!

Re: 1960 Norman Rockwell. 2009 CNN photo.
