I actually see nothing wrong with the design itself. Its basically a messaging feature phone, and I don't recall anyone laughing too much about the slider.

The confusing message to developers is of more concern.

On the contrary. This is obviously the risk of using open source software. Windows Mobile, while closed source, does come with rock solid *unlimited* indemnification against being sued.

Also, your explanation above is why Microsoft can get money out of Amazon for using Linux - great risk to the OEM from using open source software.

Specious argument. It did not stop the masses from buying iPhones. Even the iPad does not offer ANY multi-tasking, and its selling like hot cakes.

Lots of apps, because a)Microsoft is jumpstarting development with incentives and b) confidence in developers that device sales will come.

Why should developers waste their time on the iPhone when its almost half the market share of Android? Sounds like Apple is once again losing to an open OS.

Since when does Microsoft give refunds for unused licenses? According to Canalys 2.6 million Windows MOBILE handsets to sold quarter. Are they rotting in warehouses also?

That's is an incredibly bad run rate! According to their official numbers (http://www.met.police.uk/cr... there were 34,670 robberies in the last year, or 94 per day and 3200 rapes (around 10 per day). Those cameras sure make people feel a lot more safer than they really are. In fact they appear pretty useless.

To man those hundreds of thousands of cameras each day likely cost a few thousand per day and a few million per year. They would catch way more than 6 criminals per day if they posted that amount of money as a reward for turning in criminals.

Windows CE7, just released, supports dual core. See this demo video here, where the UI is run on one core and the app logic on another.

First, Android overtaking the iPhone shows the market is still dynamic. Secondly with 12 000 apps less than 6 months after launch Windows Phone 7 is growing at the same rate the iPhone did, and faster than Android.

The people who say it is too late to unseat a dominant player are also always the same ones to tout firefox and chrome market share gains and the latest mac sales growth.

Android has proven its possible, and so far Windows Phone is following pretty nicely in in tracks.

How exactly is that relevant? It sounds to me just what Apple fans say to make themselves feel better. The multiple devices thing did not prevent Apple from dominating the iPod arena. It is clearly just an excuse.

How do you know your postulated "change in the market" is really relevant to the growth of a new app store. These "changes in the market" did not help webOS with 6000 odd apps after 2 years, Blackberry app world with 25000 apps after two years or Symbian or Meego. It seems to me by following a same trajectory as the iPhone it is in a different class from the other operating systems, and that this is an indicator of success.

The anti-trust move was very damaging to Microsoft, just like it was to IBM, and removed its competitive edge (the aim after all) by reducing internal cooperation, hence the many overlapping Microsoft products that do not work well together.

If this action succeeds, imagine if Google is forced to offer Daily Motion and MSN Video videos on top of its search results whenever it also offers Youtube video results, irrespective of relevance.

The good news for Microsoft is that their consent decree, which resulted in 600 lawyers monitoring all their important meetings, expires in a month or two. They may still be able to recover from the assault and start to create the integrated products which made them popular in the first place.

Imagine for example Windows phone 7 which integrates tightly with Office 35 and desktop Windows.
