Aggressively following 10's of thousands of people on Twitter IS spam. No question! There is no "social butterfly" exception either ... it's always SPAM. You follow a ton of people because you want them to hear YOUR message ... not because you give a shit about them.

It's not a fun, or genuine, way to use the medium ... but it is an effective strategy for creating clicks and attention. The appeal is obvious. As long as the rules allow it ... I can't blame people for doing it.

But I totally agree that bulk unfollowing after aggressive following is THE WORST violation of social etiquette. You shouldn't show your face again in public. And what Seth did was even worse {and YES I AM calling him out :: HEY! SETH! CALL OUT!} ... because he has the air of legitimacy and smarts about him. Some tweeps were probably honored when he followed :: and then he unfollows with a "mea culpa" that asks YOU to reapply for HIS attention. wtf? You were using Twitter WRONG dog ... not me. You already taxed my time by pretending to be interested in me when you were not. If this is a genuine Saul to Damascus type moment ... then honor compels you to give up the old Twitter account completely and start fresh. YOU remember the people you liked ... and re-ask them for their attention. Otherwise what you just did is TOTAL GARBAGE.

I was filtered out of Twitter search for 48 hours back in March.

I write an anti-spammer blog :: And I use Twitter aggressively to try and disrupt the businesses of various web ConMen. Once I write a post about a bad guy ... I will send the link as an @reply joke to anyone who talks to that ConMan. The tweets are always original ... but the link is always the same. This violates the letter, but not the spirit, of the "same link" rule. I was also reported as Spam simultaneously by a large network of, ironically, spammers. That was enough to trip the filter ... and my account went silent.

I immediately put in a ticket with Twitter Support. 48 hours later I was back in full ... only tweets during the filter were lost to search ... the rest were restored. Support never replied to my ticket over 9 weeks with three resubmissions.

However :: I've since become even more aggressive ... and the Spam complaints have likely been more frequent ... and it's never happened again. I think it's likely that one human override of the spam-filter-algorithm prevents future occurrences. So maybe that's a small upside to being unfairly silenced?

It's too bad that they are so terrible at blocking actual spammers :: Who are clearly running riot.

I especially appreciate your pointing out that Perry's "debts" to society have not been "paid." It's been a frustrating argument to hear 5 times a day for 9 months. The victims of these scams and crimes are REAL people who have suffered REAL harms, and they will never receive any compensation at all.

A plea bargain {negotiated by a uber-high-priced lawyer} and probation, absolutely does not set things back to neutral.

1. I'd like to contest the characterization of my post as a good example of abuse. I read and followed the Terms of Service very carefully. The comments I left were biting and aggressively negative, but they were also substantive and well crafted. They contained only a watered down version of my usual shenanigans, and I think they were well within the rules.

If those comments had been left up, and every user of the Google Toolbar was able to see them, then their effects would have been devastating. I write better copy than Harlan, and the truth is on my side. He would be paying for the clicks to bring people to his crap sites, where I could then conceivably covert a large percentage of them into readers {and haters of Harlan natch!}.

I think that's hilarious in the case of Kilstein, but I'm undecided about it in other more ambiguous contexts. It might be a huge fiasco. Is the world ready for actual openness? There is much reason to doubt.

2. I wouldn't read too much in to the fact that all my comments were deleted so quickly ... my situation is atypical. I left 13 comments over a very short time period for the sake of the blog post {not a normal thing to do}. Harlan is lost in obsession over me ... I'd guess each of those comments were reported as abuse dozens and dozens times in that same short time period by the spam-cloud he recently used to have my wordpress.com blog taken down for, ironically, spamming.

Michel :: I totally agree with you that there is certainly no "need" to name names. Especially if you ARE willing to point to the "sins" in a highly specific way. Names change :: but sins stay the same :: so pointing to the sins is at least as important {if not more important} as calling people out directly.

However :: I think the far more insidious problem {and the one that should be being discussed} is the naming of names in the other direction. There is ZERO need for people who are technically competitors to go around giving each other public "endorsements."

False and hollow endorsements :: and the exchange of endorsements as an industry standard :: is a BIG part of the problem here.

Funny/relevant story. There is course that everyone takes before the Bar ... BARBRI. It's basically a corrupt monopoly that uses fear to sell a five thousand dollar "info product" which turns out to be videos of professors speaking about Bar subjects that you sit and watch in rooms with 100's - 1000's of other fearful recent grads.

The hard sell tactics of BARBRI work on 99% of law students ... even the ones at the most prestigious universities who basically have a zero percent chance of not passing the Bar.

I tried to get my friends :: and my sister :: to not pay for that stupid course ... to no avail. Sheeple love to believe. But I refused to pay anyone anything ... studied for two weeks by myself ... and passed with no probs.
