What your brother needed was to grow some balls and/or social capital. Left out of group chats? Just make a damn Facebook chat (or your country's equivalent messaging app in popularity if not american). iMessage was just a poor excuse to jump ship to Apple and spare himself some cognitive dissonance for defending his android use in the past.

The skin tone emojis were one of the worst concepts to be introduced to mobile/online communication. And they stem from Apple's maddening initial tendency towards skeumorphism. Although they've moved away from skeumorphism, their emoji remain a relic to that philosophy. Most other operating systems maintained relatively race neutral emoji, most notably Android I think.

what I find the maddest about iPhones (which may be a plus for some more paranoid people out there) is that if I need to borrow a friend's phone to do something, there is NO way I can find an app with any sense of efficiency. Everyone has their own idiosyncratic way of laying out their apps.
While this is true on Android as well, most OEMs leave the app tray in, and there they are always alphabetized. So much easier.

Also have to take into account that the music industry's revenue model has changed drastically to adapt to digital music and consumer preference. People aren't willing to pony up cash for music anymore, but value experiences perhaps more than any other time in history (possibly due to increased accessibility to international contact and travel). As a result, concert prices in general have been growing while record sales fall.

Believe it or not, the exact same things were said about Japanese and Korean products not that long ago. Even in the 90s, buying a Kia or Hyundai was basically like telling people you had a ticking time bomb strapped to your chest, and through the 2000s a Samsung was that crappy phone you could get for free from your carrier when what you really wanted was a RAZR

People who claim this is slower than Swype are kind of right, and kind of missing a major point. I can touch type with a keyboard, and I've been using touchscreen keyboards for three years now and I still can't type without looking without making major mistakes. When I had a sidekick, I could look where I was walking while typing and just give it a glance-over afterwards. To most people, this might not matter that much, but in places like New York, it can be (almost literally) a lifesaver. And even if it might not be technically faster than Swype or similar keyboards, it becomes effectively faster. And I was always faster with a physical keyboard than with my on-screen keyboards, anyway.

It depends on what world you live in. I have plenty of friends who work in industries (law, banking) where Blackberrys are not just recommended but required and often provided by the company

When you establish formal diplomatic relations with a nation, you have to respect all of their laws, whether you like it or not. Sometimes it seems unfair, but that's how it works, or your diplomatic counterpartner can turn right around and have their citizens violate your nation's laws and come in and protect them. It's not a precedent you want to set.

In "real world speed" I was significantly faster at typing with my Sidekick 4g than any of my touchscreen-only devices. There were two any primary reasons for this - 1) I could touch type, 2) (related) for punctuation etc I didn't have to wait for a long press or an alternate keyboard or any of that BS. It was so much easier for me to manually control exactly what I wanted to say, shifts, idiosyncratic spelling and all. I still miss that device, despite the performance shortcomings it had.

I think/would hope that most people who grew up in and after the generation of AIM - for non-US people, it was our main IM client as teenagers in the late 90s-early 2000s - are touch typists)

That tourist option is brilliant. I've been to a few countries where they prominently offer packages like that at kiosks in places like the airport and they're usually swarmed - about time for USA to get on board (from a major national carrier, that is). Probably will be a great revenue generator

Camera is priority. Pureview if Microsoft (Nokia? wonder who owns that one now) makes a module. 13mp wide-angle front-facing (yes I take a lot of selfies). Maybe the camera module can have a built-in grip like the optional one for the Lumia 1020 (you would install the camera module last and it would slide over the rest of the phone). Optical zoom???
RAM is second. 3GB or even 4
Processor - I can do with a lower end, maybe a 610. I don't run anything insanely power-hungry. Bump it up if it doesn't support low-power always-on listening (spoiled by moto x now)
Memory - 64GB or 128GB, but not a priority. I keep a lot in the cloud now.
Display - 1080p or even 720p is fine, but AMOLED. medium or large-sized module, so the largest display that will fit in that. Front-facing speakers (I'm going to assume that comes built into the display module)
Biggest battery I can fit at that point. Preferably >3000mAh. I'm okay with bulk.
