Apparently break drums used to be made out of steel and when they were suspended they ranging like bells. This makes me question if I should use a break drum for a piece written earlier in time or find a more accurate sound.

Re: http://thomasburritt.tumblr.com/post/490260735

Right now I am working on Keiko Abe's Wind in the Bamboo Grove. This is the first larger more demanding piece I've worked on and right now it is presenting a lot of challenges. There are several licks were i'm playing double vertical runs down the instrument and I've never really had track that many notes that fast. It's proving to be a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, but I should be able to work it up for my jury at the end of the year. Also that piece is requiring a much firmer grip than I have used in the past and it's a very loud piece at moments.

Re: http://thomasburritt.tumblr.com/post/409625866

One thing I think people have to remember is that although older audience pass away, younger audiences get older too. Classical music is not necessarily for everyone. To quote my professor "people want to hear music that the performer really cares about performed at a very high level". I took my mom with me to a So Percussion Concert, she is a piano player and singer but not a professional musician, and I was worried that she, not being aware of reich and cage etc., was not going to enjoy the concert. To my surprise she really loved the performance. People just wanna hear good music, and although some people are stuck in their beliefs of what "good music" is, most people are open to hearing new and old stuff. I don't think orchestras need to change what they are doing to fit a different group of people. It is cool to add newer pieces like the concerto, but they shouldn't try to change how they operate to fit a "new" audience. They tried to do that with Pops orchestras but they just created a new genre instead of bridging a gap.

Re: Percussion Axiom TV

I'm working on rotation 2 and doing the parts hands separately has been killer helpful in me getting the piece. it allowed me to focus on individual awkward spots and technique things i had to work out. And it allowed me to think about each line individually and where the melody or counter melody is.

Re: Percussion Axiom TV

As for me, my goals this year and just to be more organized and ahead of the game. I often find I get behind and have to freak out to finish things, so I am just going to get it done sooner.

Unrelated to the show, I was wondering what people opinions are about lug/tension rod lubricant, particularly for concert snare drums. Someone recommended motor oil to me and I was wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks

Re: Percussion Axiom TV

That is a really great topic and I would love to have more episodes about similar topics. I tend to use slower connected motions. It's has been described to me not actually change the sound, but how the audience perceives the sound. Also i tend to make the second note is a slow connected line a little softer than the first so the first leads into it. I'm working on the Burritt Prelude 3, which has lots of space that the notes need to be connected through.

Re: Percussion Axiom TV

That was a really interesting show, i'd love it if you did another one on that. Unfortunately i've only really had any experience with one piece of japanese music and I wasn't even playing it, one of my studio friends was. So by default I guess it's frogs, though I wasn't the hugest fan of that piece.

Re: Percussion Axiom TV

I'm really excited for pasic, this is my first time going and i can't wait. could you just go through some of things you are excited about for pasic like you did in the past cuz i'm having some trouble sifting through all the events happening
