My takeaways from this exchange are:

- It makes sense to put some societal resources into AI safety research.
- Since there are billionaires interested in it, some resources are being put into this already
- Is this investment the right size? Ceglowski might say it's too big, MIRI might say too small.
- More societal resources should be put into tech benevolence and poverty elimination than is currently being done

I thought square brackets were for array references. How does that work? If I try to define a class with a version number, it gives a syntax error:

class Foo[1.0]
end

SyntaxError: (irb):95: syntax error, unexpected '\n', expecting &. or :: or '[' or '.'
from /usr/bin/irb:11:in `<main>'

My least favorite thing: The site changes shape as you're reading it, because they keep loading more ads (or even regular images that are part of the site). And then a rift appears in the page, like a monster opening its maw, only for another ad to appear within.

Other sites that have half a paragraph before the text fades, and you have to click "keep reading" to make it show up, because it wasn't clear from visiting the link that you actually wanted to read the page.

Also, sites that just wrap around a YouTube video with some ads and some filler content that probably would just describe the YouTube video if I even cared to read it (these are particularly endemic on Facebook). Just link to the YouTube video, bro.

Can you explain the term "new logo"? I haven't heard it used this way before. Does it just mean that the customer is now using your product, which has your logo on it?

As programmers we instinctively want to make things more efficient. When successful, this often results in lessening the need for messy, squishy humans. You've said programmers should realize that "you are in the business of unemploying people". Do you have any thoughts on how we can prevent the "grim meathook future" this could lead to, where the vast majority of humanity is starving because the handful of owners just don't need them?

The /dev/null thing never happened. It's just an urban legend.

My "whatever I happen to be thinking about" blog is hard to keep up. Things are either too private, or I'd need to be able to control distribution for a particular post to "everyone in the world but X", for different values of X per post. So I don't post often enough to maintain the addiction. Your WIHTBTA blog seemed to work well when you did it though.

Perhaps technology will (or has) make it easier for groups with aligned interests to come together. The squeezed middle class might not have time to attend their local citizen's organization meeting, but they could probably lurk on it's forum or facebook group.

I suppose you could look that as a problem:) It's also entirely possible that I totally misunderstand how the system works, or am missing the reasons lobbyocracy is a really bad thing. I guess more wealthy groups can hire more lobbyists, but I wonder if there's a point of diminishing returns. I guess there is advertising/PR to consider.
