He was previously the community involvement manager for Capital Metro and formerly served on the Planning Commission.

Re: Public Notice: Something at Lake Long?

but really, a golf course? Notwithstanding the water use issue, which was pretty lamely addressed at the last minute, I'm surprised no one made a bigger deal of run off during construction, or once in use, of chemicals and other material into the water. There are already loads of other events out there, many which include swimming. Are these to be put at risk for a golf course?

A better solution would be to use the park land for a natural mountain bike, cyclocross and adventure racing courses. None of which would require any significant earth moving, or anything other than brush cleaning and grass cutting. Obstacles can be installed without concrete, and for the most part once completed these would remain wild habitats when not in use.

These are all massively growing sports, Austin is hosting the Cyclocross National Championships in January in Zilker Park(ffs!). Between practice, training and events and the environmentally more efficient use of the parkland, this sort of use which be much better for parkland use. On the other hand it would be hard to make bucket loads of money from it...

Re: ewan.to - Why do IBM and Sun fail so badly at web services?

I guess it depends on perspective and business model. Amazon don't try to make money from their web services, they make money through selling things, so do Sun and IBM. What Sun and IBM sell are computers, and as such, while its possible we could make money by selling lost cost or free web services access, the basic set-up would have to be paid for by something, a business, a product etc.

IBM at least isn't interested for now in making money from longtail developers. Long term maybe everything will run in the clouds, but before that can happen, someone has to build those clouds. Amazon, google and ebay et all can't build machine rooms for the planets computing and so you end up at companies. We'd rather constrain the programs we run so that the companies who buy stuff can get what they need, when they need it.

It's not what I'd want, but it's a business model, and thats more than what Amazon has for their services. Maybe they'll persist, in five years time we'll be out of the game, Amazon, google et all will rule as well as rock. But then again maybe not.

Go ahead, sign-up and build your business on Amazon. It's great work if you can get it. If on the other hand you work at a company who could use their own cloud, gives us a call. Better still, email me!
