Fantastic article about what is probably the crux of so many brands' and retailers' problems today, but I have one question for the author: In the second paragraph, you name contemporary brands and "direct-to-consumer upstarts" in addition to fast fashion behemoths as those best navigating the see-now-buy-now market. In the second-to-last paragraph, however, you suggest that smaller brands lack the resources to pull off the SNBN model. Which is it? And what is the benchmark for a "small" brand? How does one define it? By revenue? Employee count? Public or private? If public, stock price? Some clarification would have been great to see.

As a fashion marketer who has worked for brands both large and small, I think smaller ones have the advantage here because what the best lack in money and sophistication, they make up for with agility and authentic, customer-first messaging. It's easier to turn around a speedboat than it is an ocean liner. Major brands hesitate to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in 360-degree marketing campaigns, while upstarts embrace the opportunity to get scrappy. But who knows? Perhaps it's still too early to tell.

Having survived a divorce in the 10th month of marriage, I can say with confidence that marriage was not the life-affirming dream I had hoped it would be, and its dissolution was not a disaster. Even my father said to me, as we moved the last boxes out of my ex's apartment for the long drive back home: "I have never been prouder of you than I am today, seeing you stand up for yourself and walk away from unhappiness." Leaving can be costly and humiliating (especially at 30), but consider the alternative!

Most women's style sites and magazines seem to forget that a great deal of their readership is neither liberal nor amused by constant attacks from the left. (Not even Vogue can stay above the fray.) Keep up the moderate viewpoint, and you'll keep a lot of happy, conservative readers.

Have been considering Lasik for years but never really know what went on in the operating room or after, so this story is a Godsend. The thought of my cornea being sliced in half is terrifying, but if you, Caroline, can acknowledge the same fear and then brush it off (along with your Opti-Free), then I can handle the laser. Strong similarities between these new Coach handbags and Balenciaga's (also overexposed) motorcycle bags that were the arm candy of many a Hollywood It girl back in the early aughts. I'll be interested to see how this aesthetic update affects the brand's bottom line. (And also, I have always loved their logo-less Heritage line--the bucket bag and simple cross-body style are universally chic.) xx
