Yes, since the site literally just launched today, the content is indeed thin. Hopefully that changes.

Of course, since the board is meant to focus on one type of job (community and social media), it'll likely always be smaller than many others out there. And that's OK.

Re: My iPhone nits

Spike, updated the post but to clarify, I was thinking more instant sorting, versus changing your fixed options via the settings. In my mind, this is actually quite an accurate way to look at what traditional marketing is about. The marketer picks a target, determines the ammunition and then fires. Once the artillery has landed, they look at the results. They rarely seem to pay much attention to the effect this has outside of the splash radius.

Would love to hear more from ya!

Re: links for 2007-09-20

Perhaps my sarcasm wasn't dripping enough :)

Yeah, I'm disgusted by NBC. First off, those look really nice for PM systems. I like the tasty interfaces and easy flow they seem to have.

But for my Perfect App, the project management vibe has to be removed. Getting volunteers, community members to participate in your company's projects is tricky to ensure they don't feel "used". As I mentioned in the post, my concern is that if they feel like it's a "work" only activity, a PM tool focused on "tasks and deadlines" they may feel taken advantage of or simply free labor.

OK, wireframes it is! :)

Re: The perfect customer interaction support tool

Satisfaction is cool, but with everything public it doesn't really address the whole top secret thing :)

Re: Become an Evanglist

Sandra,

Sorry but I'm not sure quite what you mean. I guess I'm on hyper alert these days when people start talking about how great a "musician" is... like Britney, for example. These folks are performers. Perhaps great performers, but not musicians.

Matthew, I'm not sure exactly who the people you refer to in your comment are, but I assume they're some of the same people I'd call performers too. Great, world-class performers, but performers nonetheless.

But you're both right, I'm probably being a bit harsh on the individuals, Carrie specifically.

Re: Rapid Fire – Saturday, December 01

Heh - I'm a fan of great content!

Re: Industry maturity brings different challenges

Kevin- first off, thanks for the comment. But let me point out that, unfortunately, you've fallen victim to either incomplete attention to the details or have gotten suckered into the rumors going around. From their site:

---
8. Are you trying to 'regulate' or 'police' the blogosphere?
Absolutely not. The Blog Council is a peer community where we learn from each other. We have no intention of creating policy or regulating anyone. The opposite is actually the case ... we help companies learn to work with the existing standards of blog ethics set by the free and open blogosphere.
---

So they're not trying to *define* standards, they're trying to *understand how to implement* them. This really isn't any different than the group of industry buddies I sometimes get together with to discuss my business, work/life balance, problem clients/vendors, etc.

But as far as Dan Greenburg being an example... I'd wholeheartedly disagree. Dan is a shill, a hack, and borderline immoral. Whether he shared his tactics or not, they were out of line. Assuming that anything that goes on behind closed doors equates to "Dan Greenburgism"is far too cynical an approach to life, at least for me.

Thanks again for the discussion!

Re: More on The Blog Council: Do we practice what we preach?

Des, thanks for the thoughts! First off, I liked your post and didn't mean to imply that you were "just part of the negative crowd".

I'm not at all saying that people who don't support it are ethically or intellectually challenged. Not at all. My concerns are several things:

1. The wrath of the blogosphere - so so so many of the posts, tweets, etc. that I've read have had a reaction based on little to no *actual* understanding of what the group actually is. They have a "my way or the highway" vibe to them.

2. The "experts" aren't thinking enough about the bigger picture (convincing the world to come around to our way of thinking) and are instead, largely writing tirades that do nothing more than further scare/turn off corporate types who absolutely DO have issues that we individuals don't.

3. The "all or nothing" view of this "social" thing. We can't stand around bitching that companies don't get it, then when they do (or start to try to) stand on the sidelines and call them "jackass" for it.

I understand why all of us are so cynical, I just don't think it does any of us any good to have it be so clearly visible.

Re: Blog Council Feedback Roundup

@Stephen, I certainly can't fault your thinking regarding engaging bloggers. I recommend that approach regularly to clients.

But not every problem requires the same solution. In this case, these are people who are already blogging. Perhaps blogging in large amounts that may know as much, if not more, as any of the blogger types you have in mind. The challenges the Blog Council members face are simply not the same challenges smaller bloggers have. I've mentioned them elsewhere, but a few random refreshers:

* How to blog for multiple languages when you only speak one
* How to deal with open communication when your market launches may be staggered for various reasons
* Getting colleagues on board with this "blogging and transparency thing"
* How to take suggestions and properly funnel them through an organization to completion (or at least resolution)
* When to spend marketing money on/around the blogging efforts and when to reject it
* How to blog openly (and thus correctly) in the face of SEC issues
* Alignment of information coming out of the organization (not to get the "message" spun right, but to ensure that the real, actual facts are ALL coming out as the real story, not a single, country-specific part of a larger story)

I'd challenge you to find ANY "smaller blogger" who could offer any real input on issues like these.

Thanks for the comment!

Re: Addictive Monetizing

First off, you score no points from me for posting anonymous insults.

Second, I'll do some digging and see what the realities are.
