I was a campaign staffer that was unionized. I don't remember the specifics of our union contract but I know that the right to some vacation days was in there, among other things. I don't know the specifics of the Morales campaign, but campaign staffers are vulnerable to exploitation. You typically have a lot of very young people in their first management roles who are given specific goals & metrics to hit. You're asked to work very long hours, seven days a week. There isn't an HR department and everyone is so busy that it's very hard to make significant changes once things are in full swing. I've been lucky on the campaigns I've worked on, but there are a lot of horror stories out there.

As someone who works campaigns, I find that a lot of progressive campaign workers also move on to non-profit/advocacy or political-adjacent organizations like Emily's List, Sunrise, voting rights orgs, Planned Parenthood, Working Families Party, etc.

Big Bear in Bloomingdale is lowkey the best pizza in the city right now. The crust is made with some artisanal wheat and is incredibly flavorful. Timber has the best/most interesting toppings but the pizza base itself is not as good as Big Bear.

I think this is a good example of choosing between being right and getting things done fast. You're absolutely right that someone else should be responsible for rodent mitigation but it could take a while for anything to happen. I would just buy some rat bait stations for your own yard and for the house under construction. I used to live in a terrible building with a terrible landlord where rats would run around our trash area all day long. I would toss rat poison out the window. I also received mine through Medstar and they've sent me multiple emails inviting me to sign up for shots I've already gotten...my vaccination site was also completely empty the entire time I was there. I appreciated the VIP exclusive treatment but wish they were scheduling more people instead of emailing the same people multiple times!

It's a misleading statistic. Basically, the Federal government gets a bunch of vaccine doses to and that's counted as part of DC's total doses. But the Feds are slow to report how many of their doses have actually been used, so it skews our total doses used number downward.

The idea that the Black community was particularly hesitant about the vaccine was from a November 2020 survey. Different & more recent surveys have shown vaccine hesitancy amongst racial/ethnic groups to be largely even.
The best predictor of someone not wanting a vaccine is if they are a Republican.

First, vaccines really are not going unused. DC is doing an above average job of getting our allotment of vaccines into arms as quickly as possible. Using a model that boosts equity to some degree in no way slows down the process of getting people vaccinated. All of the slots are still getting used up.

Second, if you are trying to slow transmission, it makes the most sense to target the communities where Covid is more prevalent for a variety of factors. The priority zip codes have people who are more likely to have jobs that can't be remote or live in homes with more people per square foot or need to regularly use public transportation, etc. It's not a flawless system, but the assumption is that someone who has an underlying medical condition in a priority zipcode is more likely to be exposed to covid than someone with an underlying condition in a non-priority zipcode.

I'm a former agent. Once you're already at an asking price of hundreds of thousands of dollars, someone bumping their offer up by $5k only nets maybe another $50 in commission after paying your brokerage their split & taxes etc. It's easier for an agent to just close a deal quickly. If someone was selling your home, you'd want them to get you the highest price for it! There are shady brokers out there but most of us just want to do well by our clients and complete drama-free transactions.

The DC mural was painted by the Mayor as a performative gesture while she simultaneously is trying to increase the policing budget & defund violence interruption.
She also had curfew on election day start an hour before the polls closed & stopped public transportation, which made it hard for people (who waited up to 6 hours in line) to vote safely.
Activists here are pretty unhappy about it being the ONLY thing she is doing.

Some of these houses would have had servants doing the cooking (esp the ones that have a liveable third story) so people didn't really care how great the user experience was in the kitchen!
