New partnerships are certainly needed. I am encouraged by a recent announcement in November by Pfizer, Eli LIlly, and Novartis to build an open platform that uses a patient’s Blue Button clinical data (providers that have an EHR and have pledged to share patient data with patients) to match him or her with appropriate clinical trials. Pfizer has stated that they think their use of Blue Button will allow any patient who has access to their Blue Button data to discover and learn about relevant clinical trials, based on a trial’s target profile criteria. The intention is that this new platform will help to expand the overall pool of potential patients and increase the likelihood of a match. This is scheduled to launch in spring of 2014. Perhaps such tools may help bridge the gap btween patients with rare diseases and researchers.

Re: Digging In

Charlie,

Thank you for this blog. Back in Nov. 2009, the FDA held its first hearing on social media, followed by a 90-day comment period. Several stakeholders, including myself and several colleagues, offered ideas on how to properly harness the medium in the clinical research arena. One of our suggestions included using the FDA's guidelines on radio/TV in adapting a social media framework. For example, if a set of facts were approved by the IRB in advance, then as long as faithful adherence was provided on a social media platform, pharmaceutical companies could directly recruit for studies. How's that for efficiency? I am sure there are many suggestions the FDA could adopt to help it formulate a constructive policy on social media, but forever postponing its rules is not one of them.

Keep the pressure on,
Carmen

Re: Ars Vita

Alas, our primordial brain will always crave more pleasure no matter how comfortable our present status. For Brinker to pursue strategy and fundraising is the whole shebang of an organization's direction and focus. In times of peril, there are opportunities for breakthrough advances. Wouldn't it be refreshing to see Brinker invite additional members to her board from the larger breast cancer community, including those most critical? Wouldn't it be transformative for the organization to take an accounting and admit it can do better? Surely. But don't hold your breath. That would require real leadership.

Re: The change we need: hospice and palliative care, and patient empowerment

As someone on Twitter once said, "raise your hand if you're not going to die." My sense is that a layman's reference site may be helpful to the average lawyer and that every client should be invited to offer up an honest assessment of their lawyer's efforts, good and bad. My thoughts are that Pfizer approached this digital initiative with the hopes that digital media could self-recruit. They learned the hard way that this medium hasn't achieved critical mass. Moreover, I fear they may be focusing on recruitment without thinking about retention. Thankfully, you noted that they are surveying current study volunteers to improve their process. Let's hope they are asking the right questions that are not short-sighted. Ideally, rather than re-make the wheel, it would be prudent if Pfizer reached out to patient recruitment experts who could save them time and effort in honing their strategy. Alas, recruitment and retention are the after-thoughts in the clinical research equation to pharma's peril.

Re: http://www.underpaidgenius.com/post/18665674669

I see a concurrent opportunity for new legal models of co-habitation. The biggest issues regarding the marriage revolve around property and inheritance rights. If we had "checkboxes" for shorter ties, as in a 5-year relationship for starting families, then people would have more options without the need for marriage. What if I want my best friend, not my lover, to decide issues of medical emergency care? What if I want my niece and nephews to inherit my property, not my mate? All these choices should be made available by the state for greater personal control. I can imagine a system that asks high school seniors to complete a checklist and to re-evaluate it every 5 years to keep pace with their evolving lives and priorities.
