Personally, I can't stand even the sight of the idiot, let alone his trash talk supporting violence in hockey.

Re: Investigation backs Mounties in bar incident | Local | News | Vancouver 24 hrs

I hope that English is not your first language Mr. Jones, because you have grossly misinterpreted or misunderstood the statement attributed to the CJB. A person with a reasonable understanding of the Queen's English would not jump to the conclusion that you have in your comment.

Re: http://www.farmersdairy.ca/pages/recipes/Homegrown/NancysSeafoodChowder.php

Sounde like the excellent chowder my grandmother used to make, however she fried up a few strips of bacon and then sauteed the onions and celery in the bacon fat with some butter if needed. She also added sliced carrots to her pot to add a bit more colour and flavour. I've adapted to build this for a crowd of 75 and it was a huge hit!

Re: Paging maintains relevance when message matters most

I agree, Glen, that voice paging is here in the voluteer fire service for a while yet. The one circumstance that wasn't mentioned earlier that is so predominant in the volunteer fire service is the fact that as we age, we can't read a text message until we can find our spectacles - which you don't need to hear a voice message. It would be nice however, to have a voice pager in the growing 700 MHz band so we can hear traffic without needing to operate a VHF paging network along with a 700 MHz or 800 MHz operations network.

Re: Solar charger helps in a pinch

Sounds like a marvelous device. While there is no mention of the voltage output of the unit, it would be a great asset for charging portable radios and pagers following a hurricane or other event that eliminates commercial electrical power or for forest fire fighters who are frequently camped in locations with no electricity or are operating at a distance from an electrical supply.

Re: Building a Fire Department Communications System can be Tricky | FIRE CHIEF

Very interesting story, but I'm curious as to why Phoenix Fire wouldn't have just used 700/800 MHz simplex channels (direct radio-to-radio) for communications in the 'hazard zone'? This would achieve the desire of communications locally without relying on repeaters and other technologies, and eliminates the need for officers to carry two radios to enable interoperability with other agencies.

This practice works well in our province-wide trunked 800MHz Motorola system in those jurisdictions where the local fire service has migrated from their legacy VHF radios to the trunked system.

Re: Why isn't P25 right for utilities?

Certainly in Canada there is interest and in fact a desire to have utilities and other owners/operators of critical societal infrastructure participate in primarily public safety communications systems. Unfortunately Industry Canada, the spectrum regulator, seems to be determined to separate public safety from critical infrastructure providers, but an effort is currently being championed by some provinces to have this policy reversed. Its success remains to be seen.

Re: Procrastinators win, public safety loses

I have to agree with Glenn on this one. Requiring people to be accountable for themselves and their actions or inaction is long overdue. Although I'm in Canada I certainly have been well informed on USA television stations about the February transiton deadline. The one consolation for those public safety agencies in the USA negativelty affected by this four month delay is that at least it is only four months. In Canada the regualtory body responsible for radio spectrum, Industry Canada, abdicated their responsibility to the Canadian Radio and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) which is supposed to be responsible for content and format and which arbitrarily set the Canadian transition deadline for August 2011.
