Dealing with this super hard right now, made more complicated by the fact that I directed a TV show about weddings for three years, so I've seen... not "it all" but an awful lot. My partner and I have discussed that I have a ten year head start on him in terms of thinking about this both because I've been socialized as a ciswoman and had a professional deep dive, but his approach has been very all or nothing, with no middle ground/customized traditions.

I am not a careful reader. But I love to throw my two cents in the pot-
Coming from a film stance, which arguably is different in terms of the roles of talent vs crew vs guiding bodies, maybe this isn't a case of women not being forceful or decisive enough directors but that women (generally in my experience) are more open to collaboration. The phrasings Lara Stone mentioned sound more like the photographer is inviting her participation as a professional in shaping the shoot- let's try this- let US (as a team) make this image. This is why I (generally and only based on my experience) prefer to work with women when I make films- no one has to be right, the director isn't a dictator, and we can all shape our art together. Not to make a gross generalization, but perhaps that's because most of us don't see making art as a giant dick measuring contest and are more open to creating something everyone can own, rather than something for which only the director retains creative ownership.

Is this a dangerous idea? It's just been my professional experience working with women vs working with men.

f.a.i.t.h.h.o.l.l.a.n.d. is why we got those on navy blue (and I think I remember saying it was clashy, and protesting the color.) (because that was the same year that you informed me you knew I wasn't feeling well in whatever-class-we-had-together because I was wearing a black shirt and navy blue hoodie.)(and to this point that color combo still irks me to no end.)

The sound editor gathers all of the sounds to make the film's space "real"- like birds and dialogue and car sounds and wind

The sound mixer masters all of the elements (from production sound, ADR, and added by the editor) and makes them ready for exhibition of the film.

(also, I watch the oscars like you do- mostly just exclamation points forever. and they're my superbowl too!)

I believe the point here is that to care about what really matters in the world and to care about chanel nail polish are not two mutually exclusive facets of an individual.

To say there's way more to life to worry about is to demand the exclusion of all aesthetic pursuits- there's more to life than the silly television shows and movies I make and watch, or the books we read. there's earthquakes and plagues and how DARE we enjoy ourselves? But to make the argument that to care about fashion because there's "real" stuff going on in the world is to suggest that all creative consumable media should be documentary based and all writers should be journalists and all film makers creating exposees. Fiction and art and narrative film have as much validity as fashion. The same is true of food- should we eat only rice because developing a palate is bourgeois and neglects the thousands suffering from starvation? We "have" to wear clothes and we "have" to eat. How we choose to express ourselves, take a necessity and make it into an aesthetic, is what makes us highly evolved and interesting. To do so to the exclusion of all other thoughts is arrogant and materialistic, but to swing the pendulum to the other side and live sparely does not necessary garner greater influence or purity of mission. There is the same arrogance to assuming one can "care more about other more important stuff" as to the assumption that those who don't care enough about the "right" things are lesser individuals.

I agree that perspective is VITAL in maintaining a socially responsible lifestyle. Balance is key. But I don't think that was the message of this blog. Engaging intellectually on a topic such as this and considering it in the social sphere (i.e. amidst all that other "more important" stuff) is exactly what moves it away from frivolity.

as a white woman dating an asian man, i'm glad i can be considered "progressive."
Also, I think this NAILED christopher doyle's cinematography.... this is a gorgeous editorial, although I don't understand why they didn't use an asian model... it would've been fun to see jenny shimizu etc. instead of someone in yellowface... (japan's the wrong part of asia for a wong kar wai homage, but you know what I mean...)

thanks so much, meik. it's one of those situations where sympathy/empathy only comes from those who know... my roommate is mourning the loss of her computer, but I'm upset to have lost my means of creation. I'm honestly just glad I hadn't taken the plunge and invested in new lenses last month, because then where would we be? Did you ever get your stuff back/get a lead?
