People will want to be either “facebook” types or “MySpace” types. I am a Google head for my default homepage and my wife uses Yahoo. I am always struck by how different Yahoo is when I hit the computer after her. Not better or worse, but clearly after a different vertical.

If you imagine a world in 2 years from now where there are globally say 250 million active profile users it seems as though you could have two legitimate suppliers of services

Sam Says: Perhaps, but again the distinction is that only one winner will emerge among the "platforms." Yahoo is very different, but it is really becoming more of a niche network, rather than the all-encompassing platform that Facebook is (and that Yahoo wishes to be)

Re: Should I Become A Sharing Snob?

@ Chen,

Thanks for your comments. I agree that privacy is in general rapidly fading away. We stand much more to gain from the collective sharing of ideas. I'm simply suggesting that when one has significant niche knowledge they can either 1) freely disseminate that knowledge with others or 2) charge money. I'm all for free, but it stinks to be the only one doing so...

Re: Disney to Spend $10M Per Virtual World

Wow. Yes, this is my exact point...startups like Facebook are really gambling when they do not start out with solid monetization policies...they set unrealistic expectations for user experience. Now Facebook has a very lofty valuation based on the investors' assumptions that Facebook will only improve and continue to add new users.

What I am saying is that from the users' perspective, he or she is now less likely to continue using Facebook as all these new ads appear, as was the case with Beacon. Basically, launching without monetization is a 'honeymoon period' sort like getting married without really knowing the person or having lived together. It sets the stage for what could be very rocky relationship

Re: An Analysis of New York City Venture Capital Investors

Approve
Sent via BlackBerry Wireless

Re: A Key Difference Between Worlds

@Andy F2F (face to face for you lay people) is certainly an interesting sociological concept when contrasted with online...I am looking to get a few upcoming posts targeting this very idea, especially around how people do work. True one definition for what is and is not patentable is impossible, but as I said before, it's really the principle... that the little guy does need some protection.
