The teachers are not to blame and neither are school administrators, the real blame lies with the idiots who invented the tables in the first place. Employees respond to the metrics used to grade their performance, when you measure the wrong things you get the wrong behaviour.

Fred, the bottom line is he has done a good job - and so have millions of other people in this country who have been denied raises or seen salaries cut or been laid off. Kinsella should be ashamed that he is taking that raise while cutting programs.

You said 'implementing "traffic calming measures,"' - oh great, our penalty for not supporting a Bocce ball court on the median is more speed bumps.

Ex mayor kennedy said " but it's more important to create a downtown that's more pedestrian and bicycle friendly.". Umm hello, if the residents and traders in downtown want that that, let them pay for it. Personally I have no intention of walking or cycling thru downtown, all I want is to be able to park near a business I'm going to. Asking me and my children to pay for others' lifestyle choices is unreasonable.

If merchants want more business then let them attract more customers with the choice of products and services they offer. Seems to me that the taxpayers of MH should not be asked to subsidize these merchants to the tune of $280,000+ each ($5.4M/19). Don't the City Council and City Manager realize that the city is broke. Where are they going with this dumb idea?

I don't have the numbers but I'm guessing that most kids in public schools have parents who work and pay taxes. In any case would you treat the children of welfare recipients differently from those with working parents, I hope not? I paid taxes and after my daughter's first two weeks at Jackson elementary we had seen enough and so paid for a private school education for her from 1st thru 12th grade, one of the reasons we had one child was that was all we could afford.
The more I think about it, the more I think I was wrong to use the word "customers", I should have used the word "clients". Safeway and Walmart have customers, the school district has long term clients that they should have a professional, supportive and deep relationship with and where they pro-actively offer advice based on their extensive knowledge/ training and experience. I see little of that going on here, relations seem to be generally broken. Neither side has trust or confidence in the other to do the right thing.

This an example of public sector thinking at it's worst - inconvenience your customers and they'll give you more money. They just don't seem to understand that many parents and even more voters believe that the job being done by MHUSD(and many other CA school districts) is inadequate - just look at the recent rush to sign up kids for the newest charter school resulting in MHUSD having too many teachers and the fact that the existing charter school consistently provides better academic results than any other school in the district.
Dr Smith et al, you won't get another dime from me unless and until you show you can provide a quality education to all kids in the district who want a quality education, one measure could be no schools in program improvement, I'm sure others can come up with perhaps better metrics to assess MHUSD performance.

The bottom line here is that the contract was negotiated and signed between the union representing teachers and the MHUSD that is supposed to put the best interests of our kids first. Clearly MHUSD knew what they were signing and it's impact on their ability to retain preferred teachers, the unions did a great job, sadly for our kids we can't say the same for MHUSD.

This editorial misses the point - well actually two points:
1) Poor planning by MHUSD led to having too many teachers on staff
2) Seniority rules that forced a perfectly good and well-prepared teacher to be replaced by someone more senior.

I agree with comments made below that we need to provide a quality education for our kids, they deserve nothing less, the problem I see is throwing more money at a system that is failing our kids, there must be accountability for performance from the teachers up to Dr Smith.

ummm, just what problem are the supes trying to fix? Unless I'm mistaken there are a lot of houses available for sale in SBC, do you really want to add more inventory in an already depresed market and drive prices down further.

Because the reassigned teacher had seniority. This decision was based on seniority of the teachers involved and not on the best interests of the children.

A couple of points come to mind. The actual decline in students was 228 and MHUSD expected a decline of 78. Who did this planning and how come it was so far wrong and not identified until this far into the school year? Don't they look at enrollments during the Summer and adjust accordingly?
Second, they did a lousy job of keeping parents informed. Our kids deserve better.

Uninvolved parents are certainly part of the problem, if they were more involved they wouldn't accept the status quo that appears to be the modus operandi at MHUSD.

Another quarter million of my money wasted in a determined effort to narrow Monterey to two lanes. There was no objective study here, Callendar was paid to keep Tewes and City Council happy by finding some way they can narrow Monterey and then call it a trial. Why are they so determined to "test" the least popular option first?

You know, it's not just the bloated salaries and benefits and lack of accountability that bothers me but at the end of the day MHUSD management and the board are just not providing our kids with a good education, at best it could be characterized as mediocre - with the exception of the Charter School. Smith has been here over a year now and I've seen no plan for sustained improvement across the board, indeed it appears test scores are going down.
MHUSD and the board have a marketing problem, their product/ service is poor and they want consumers to pay more with no plan for improvement, just more cuts if they don't get more of our money. Just to add insult to injury they're taking a page out of Tewes' playbook, hire a consultant to cover your ineptitude and avoid being held accountable for your actions. Yet more waste of my money.
